Sound File issues

I'm not sure if this is entirely the right place to post this, but I'm just curious if anybody else has ever had this problem.

I usually get long sound files that I have to break up into chunks for my voice files. So I cut and paste them into new recordings, like so:

  1. Select sound to put into new recording.
  2. Cut.
  3. Press record button while everything is muted.
  4. Delete what was just recorded (but keep the track - just delete the sound).
  5. Paste into the new track.

And lately, but I've never had this problem before, I'll get random beeps, screeches, pops, or strange echoey sounds at the beginning of the tracks when I save and reload the Audacity project. But I'm absolutely sure the original main track was completely clean and beep/screech/echo/pop free. Is there a better way to do this that won't have those strange sounds? Sometimes they get baked into the actual voice file rather than just the beginning, and I can't remove it without cutting off the first part of what the person is saying.
