Don't see a problem with heavy armor. If you look at the old classes, I think sorcerers and battlemages both use heavy armor. If you go to the skyrim blog and look for High Summoner under Character builds you might get more ideas for rp. I think there's something about Julianos.

Yep, Sorcerers in Oblivion and MW used heavy armour and specialised in conjuration.

Heavy armour is almost a bit of a signature for the role; agree with others to look up similar builds on the other sites referenced.
