This is just a short rant on the lack of choice and consequence in Skyrim, particularly the College of Winterhold storyline. It actually came into mind today when I was doing my modding and anolysing Skyrim's weaknesses.
Even though it's short, the length is not the biggest dealbreaker here. It's Ancano.
My character would've, if he wasn't essential, killed him right when they first met and the whole disaster in the storyline would've been avoided. Sure, maybe my character would be expelled from the college but at least the choice would be there to haunt my player for times to come.
Instead, my character goes against her insult-me-and-die personality and is railroaded into a series of dungeon crawls instead. The entire questline breaks RP and makes it seem like my character would actually take the diplomatic route when in the past games that she was in, she always took the violent route and ended questlines pretty early because of her actions.
The same thing is with the Companions (werewolf) and the Thieves Guild (selling her soul to Nocturnal).
