In the object window I searched for idles and got a long list. Is there any way to preview how that idle will look? Right clicking and edit and preview don't work to show the idle animation.

You can preview animations by opening up any actor form, setting the preview mode to full, and then going through the animations available in the "Animation" tab in the Actor window.
