Probably for the same reasons that all those romance novels in the grocery store "seem to be exclusively for women." Since that's pretty much what it is.

There are plenty of straight men who are into bdsn, female submission, and all that creepy stuff. It's just that trashy romance and erotic fiction has historically been written and published for a female demographic. The fact that Fifty Shades started off as a Twilight fanfic only adds to the impression that it had a female audience in mind.

So let me see if I understand this:

men watch porm and aren't afraid to admit it

women read erotic novels, under the pretense that they are just reading "classic literature" because it seems less shameful

Because few women openly admit to watching porm whereas its a topic of civilized conversation between men.

Because 50 Shades is crappy written erotica no different than the other books middle aged women read to be less obvious about how they like to get hot and bothered. I don't need books for that. I HAVE THE INTERNET!

I like 50 Thousands Shades of Grey, it's a book filled with action, chases, romance and true love---the best novel ever written.

I tried to read Fifty Shades of Grey but I could even make it past page 50. That stupid airhead of a protagonsit made me want to to throw the book against the wall. She's presented as such a klutz, a ditzy, as so self-doubting and lacking in self-respect that I was actually shocked to find that she could drive a car all by herself.

I don't think this book is for anyone with a brain, male or female.
