Roman Films

Post » Wed Sep 17, 2014 5:42 pm

Hello,

I was talking with my daughter today (shes 11) and she was asking me about the Roman military and what the big deal is about them. Now of course I was like "Did I adopt you and not remember? Because my kid should know this." Anyway I pulled two Roman military films off of Netflix for her and I to watch, and boy was I extremely disappointed. I watched "The Eagle" first which I could go for hours on how inaccurate it its. Then I watched "Centurion" which again I could do the same. Now I know these are mostly action films but they are all I can find. So what I'm asking for is the names of good historically accurate Roman military films so I can show her what the Roman military was and how they fought. I have shown her many YouTube videos on the topic, taken her to reenactments, purchased her books, and I even plan on taking her to Rome to see the city and multiple major sites of battles involving the Romans.

But what I really wanted to show her were films that actually teach the viewer about history instead of films that only cash in on action and over the top violence. I'm not afraid to show her blood and gore in these films but I want her to see that these men were fighting and spilling their blood for a reason, and not only the romantic side of war but the dirty front-line version that decided the fate of the world. So don't worry about the rating she is allowed to watch films that are for people older than her as long as she can learn something important from it and its historical. Sorry for the text wall, thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

Prizrak

I don't know about historically accurate, but Gladiator is a pretty good film.

But, if you really want her to learn something, there are numerous educational programs regarding Romans which may be of interest. I generally find these types of programs pretty entertaining as well as educational.

Well, besides the Cameraman in the Colosium's audience, It wasn't extremly bad. Just corny bad.

The Histoory Channel has some good documentaries that are fun to watch, and have accurate recreations of the outfits.

Really a cameraman in the audience? That is hilarious.

Also where can I find these History Channel documentaries?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054331/ is an old, but good, epic movie, highly recommended. There's also http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058085/ although I think it's quite a bit weaker. I guess http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056937/ could be interesting too.

There's also the extremely excellent http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074006/, although being a television series from the 70s with noticeably lower budget than the above stuff, it's all drama and very little military stuff. The start is a bit slow too, but as soon you really get into the story it's hard to stop

Yup. Take a look on the Left side of the Audience in http://youtu.be/ClWLvHjUABs?t=1m20s. You'll see the guy wearinga T-sirt and Jeans, and the GIANT CAMERA next to him. Ther's also http://static1.beanscdn.co.uk/modules/ems-v2/seriesItem/images/aeroplane_in_Troy.jpg.jpg In Troy.

You can actually find some of the History Channel's Documentaries on youtube as well or they might be On Demand if you're lucky enough to not find every single Aliens show on there.

Thank you all who have helped out so far. Next time I'm at the film store I'll look for them if not I'll browse the internet for them. It seems like all the old films are the ones that seem to focus more on being historically accurate at least more so than now. We just got done watching Jason and the Argonauts (1963) not a very "historical" film but still a good watch, and it keeps her off her phone/computer unlike most kids her age.
