Okay, now as anyone could see there are HUNDREDS of tech threads floating around in CD - ranging from questions about graphics hardware, to questions about pricier graphics hardware and other tech such as monitors, hard drives and Processors to announcement threads of new technology and more. (I accede - I'm not being very eloquent here)

Any questions you have, tech news or ANYTHING related to buying/selling/information/announcements of new hardware should go here.

For example, if you come to the forums to ask "What is the better graphics hardware" or "What sort of RAM should I put in my PC?" then it should go here - I'm a little hazy, I know - but please keep all those graphics card and tech questions to one thread! Please!
So here's the summary, all:

  • Announcements and queries on new or unreleased tech
  • Benchmarks and results of hardware/discussion
  • Questions on what sort of hardware you need/want for your machine
  • Questions about existing tech and/or function
  • Pricing and recommendations

Should be kept to THIS THREAD.

Oh and PLEASE, if you want us to "Build" you a PC, please indicate the following:
1.) your budget in your country's currency
2.) what country you reside if not listed in your avatar area
3.) pre-assembled PC? ...or can you build your own?
4.) what is needed other than the PC tower? Monitor, speakers, mouse, keyboard, Windows OS disc? All these can jack up the price.
5.) product preferences, preferred seller, and intended aim

but please, no "I want teh superererest Peecee evar1!!!!11!1", because really, only Bill Gates has that much moolah.

And, speaking of building your own PC, two sets of good how-to videos from Newegg:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPIXAtNGGCw&feature=relmfu
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_56kyib-Ls&feature=relmfu

Thanks to SpankyTheElf for finding these additional ones:

This has been A-okayed by CCNA for all who were wondering - it's up to you to stop filling CD with the same topics again and again that ask what the most powerful card in existence is so you can (not) buy it.

If you feel you have a question or can answer one - please feel free to do so.

Thanks all.
Adding more links shortly, thank you for your patience.

(Threads 1-85 have been all pruned, may they rest in peace)

If you can find a friend who has USB 3.0 and connect it to their computer, it may tell you whether the problem is with your computer or the drive.

Maybe something is wrong with your cable. It could be that if it's a cable problem, for whatever reason, it wll work only on a USB 2.0 port. So you could borrow a friend's USB 3.0 hard drive, or USB cable, and see what's going on with your drive.

May you need to find a replacement...for your cable.

I don't think it's a cable problem, since the problem does not arise when I try it on my laptop.

I'll repost my original question here for other people reading:

I'm having problems with my external HDD not mounting and I was hoping someone could offer some suggestions.

When I connect the HDD to either Linux or Windows (it was NTFS at this point) it will sometimes make very rapid clicking noises and fail to mount. The only way I've gotten it to mount is to turn it off/on or unplug it. I've tried it on a number of different USB3 ports but the problem persists. I have not had any problems with any other USB devices, so I don't think the USB hub on the motherboard is somehow bad.

Here's what I've done so far:

  • Checked SMART data, everything was fine
  • Checked on different USB3 ports, problem still persists
  • Tried on multiple operating systems (Win8.1, Linux Mint 17) problems still persists
  • Tried on my laptop, have not been able to recreate problem
  • Ran long test with WD software to verify drive health, status came back as healthy
  • Reformatted from NTFS to ext4, problem still persists

Because I can't seem to get the drive to recreate the problem on my laptop I am assuming it is some sort of problem with my desktop and HDD, but I'm not sure what it is. I may try it on a USB2 port and see if it still has the same issue, while all my other USB devices work fine I don't have any USB3 devices to test my desktop with, so that could be the problem. If the problem persists under USB2 I think my next course of action is to buy a different enclosure and see how that works, unless someone here has any suggestions.

So, i got an idea. My 250GB HDD is just too small, but i have an external 750GB HDD. So, i just simply switch them. But is it possible for me to clone the 250's content on the 750 so that the OS won't notice anything as far as the program and game installations are concerned? (Windows 7, installed on a SSD).

What I did first was to hook my PC up to my Samsung TV, played for 2 one-hour sessions (I couldn't play two hours straight as I started getting dizzy from sitting too close to the TV - played Skyrim on it). Not once did I see any black screen. So I figured it could be my monitor, or at least the DVI cable. I hooked it up back to my monitor, and then I haven't had a black flash since Saturday :D. This is so odd as I've been unplugging and reconnecting the cable to the monitor to the PC all the time, and I didn't change anything else in my setup. I'm going crazy trying to figure out what happened.

If it's the monitor, maybe it occurs after your monitor get hot (inside, some particular circuits), or if it's the cable, it could be that some wires (inside the cable) are lose and making no contact under specific conditions.

Try that: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Junction-Link-Magic.shtml

-------------

Why would I want to do this?
1. You have an SSD/HDD setup and want to move some games/programs off to the hard drive to save SSD room(No reinstall required).
2. You have a second hard drive and want to move programs/games off to make more room(No reinstall needed).
3. You have a HDD/SSD system and want to place your most demanding games on the SSD(without reinstalling).
4. Your drive is almost full. While the linked files appear on the drive, they will not take space.

So as you see the real reason for this is to avoid uninstalling and reinstalling a program/game when you need to move it to a new drive(thus avoiding having to reconfigure or patch).

A bit of background on this(just covering what you will need to know).
Windows(linkd for 2000/xp and mklink for Vista/7/8) has the ability to redirect requests for a certain directory to another directory on another drive.

The nice thing about this is that while the data now resides on another drive, your programs still see them selves on the install drive(you are not limited to moving from c to another drive/partition's folder).

This makes junctions transparent to software and even the end user(you will see what looks like a shortcut arrow on junction folders to remind you what it is).

Why does this matter you you?

If you want to move a game/program from one drive to another, you have to uninstall it then reinstall it. In many cases this requires you to download patches and whatnot.

Why not just copy and paste the game and edit its shortcut?

Some games will allow this(mostly MMO games), but many other games and programs will have registry entries pointing to locations on the install drive so when you move the program/game,

those entries are no longer valid and things may not work right.

--------------------

In a nutshell, you will being moving a game/program to another drive(copy + paste), then removing the contents of the games folder in its installed location(you need the folder empty). You will then create a junction from the “old” location to the “new” location. As soon as this is done, you will see the files from the new location show up in the old location, but they will in fact be in the new location. After that, you can run your game/program as you normally would.

HOPE IT WORKS !!!

Yeah, I contacted Amazon again after the 2nd one. Figured I'd try for one more. I guess the third time actually is a charm. Third VX228H got here today, no dead or stuck pixels. Looks and works fine so far. Amazon Customer Service is quite nice. Anyway, thanks for the help.

Interesting, and it may come in handy when the tiny SSD starts running out of space, but i was planning on putting the 250GB drive into the external hard drive case. It still comes in handy with my PS3, so i'd rather not have both drives inside my desktop.

Yes, you can do this with Clonezilla. I've done it before, it's fairly straight forward.

http://clonezilla.org/

If you have anything you want to keep on the HDD you should back it up before though, you can't clone from SSD to HDD and keep files that exist on the HDD that I am aware of.

Unfortunately not, I haven't had much time to fiddle with it this weekend. However I don't think it's related to the cable, since I can't recreate the problem on my laptop when I had tried a couple of times. I'm not sure what else to try beyond that aside from getting a different enclosure, which I am toying with.

Actually clicking noises happens, if the drive can't get enough power from the USB port. Happen to me, if i try to connect my extrenal HDD 2.5" to the USB front ports of my case. !!!

It could be an enclosure problem as well. Have you a friend, that can borrow you his enclosure ??? (For testing purposes.)
