Why So Much Salt?

Post » Tue Sep 23, 2014 8:29 pm

Hey everybody, im trying to find a patch that removes the need for salt from just plain meat cooking recipes in the cooking function.

I tried http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/8906/?tab=2&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Fskyrim%2Fajax%2Fmodfiles%2F%3Fid%3D8906&pUp=1, but it didnt seem to do anything that I noticed... For reference I am using http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/11163/?, http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/33201/?, and http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/26228/? as the base of my game, so it might not be compatible with those mods...

There is stuff like Jerky, that would logically need salt, but largely, most foods shouldnt need it without being a stew, soup, or something else that actually makes sense...

Thanks in advance.

It's a gameplay mechanic, not necessarily a cooking realism function. The idea is to put a limiting factor on the ability to cook, because food heals you. So, make one ingredient necessary for cooking and make it relatively rare.

...Relatively rare? Salt piles are everywhere. No wonder nords have such short lifespans, what with all the sodium in their diet...

I've been meaning to making a small mod just to remove the need for Salt with most food recipes, as this never made much sense to me, and that would probably be it's only function as I don't think food needs an complete overhaul (Or add this as part of mini-overhaul, no new content, just modified vanilla content).

I'm by no means a master chef, only thing I know how to "cook" well is ramen noodles, but doesn't salt act as a preservative? I'd imagine that would make sense in a pseudo-medieval setting, if one doesn't live in one of the snowier parts of Skyrim.

True, it makes more sense to have salted meat, for preserving it, but salted everything? No.

Nords eat copius amounts of Ice Cream. Milk Drinker is an insult on the "Civilised" City Dwellers that could not get fresh Cow Milk to turn into Butter and Ice Cream. The Salt is needed for turning the Cream into Ice Cream, and making the Butter Soft. :D

There is a reason Romans used Salt as a form of Currency, some of the oldest trade routes in Our RL Cultures were used for transporting Salt from Mines.

May or may not help you, iNeed I believe has a MCM option to remove the salt requirement. It does alot of the same things as RND. I cannot recommend one over the other, both are fantastic mods.
