The closest I got is my current Breton, who specializes in Restoration and Conjuration, but dropped Alchemy, Alteration and Illusion in favor of Heavy Armor, One Handed and Block and rarely uses Speech. He was supposed to be a Priest of Julianos turned Knight Mentor, meaning he would stick to the game's default bonuses a little more, but with One Handed replacing Alchemy and Lockpicking replacing Illusion to fit with Daggerfall's favored skills for the faction(Daedric, Impish, Mysticism, Thaumaturgy, Short Blade, Alteration, and Lockpicking), but then I though "meh." I've never played a heavy-armored sword and board character for long and I figured this would be my chance.
Oh! And a pure mage Altmer. I dropped Illusion in favor of One Handed very early on, though. Bound Weapons seemed more interesting than summoning and one of my long-time characters specialized in Summons and Illusion so I didn't want to do that again. I was also thinking of dropping Destruction in favor of Archery, so I dunno if that Altmer counts anymore.
my only characters who were mages were also Breton.
and my unarmed fighter character was a khajiit.
Vriddi, probably my most played character, only perked skills she got bonuses in (2-H, Heavy Armour, Enchanting, Smithing) and Archery since I felt the need for some way of hurting a distant foe.
Skill bonuses aren't very important once you've gained a few levels so they aren't a big factor in making my characters. Racial abilities can be.
I did this with a Khajiit character. Playing an archetype can be fun- I enjoy exploring how much I can accomplish with a limited skillset.
There were a handful of times where the story of the character I had planned fit the racial bonuses, but they are negligible after a few level ups. One of my current character is an Orc that focuses on sneaking, Archery and Restoration magic. Another current Orc of mine uses Conjuration and Destruction magic.
For me, the skills I use on a certain character depends on the person that the character is.
Go ahead and do it! I did something like that back when I first started Morrowind all those years ago, two of each race focused entirely on their bonus stats.
Yeah, it's a cultural thing. It's interesting because some of the race bonuses are markedly different from Oblivion which makes perfect sense given the time between then and Skyrim. For example, you got Redguards with a bonus in Destruction and Alteration in spite of never having any bonuses to magic before, Nords now specialize in Light Armor and Imperials in Heavy when it used to be the other way around, and Nords losing their bonus to Restoration because MAGIC BAD.
Not like every single warrior to come from Hammerfell will be a spellsword or every warrior from High Rock will be a mage, like Onmund the Nord Mage who discusses this very subject with you. It just comes naturally to them because they'be been exposed to such things all their lives.
