Marmite, the ultimate controversy

Post » Sat Oct 11, 2014 1:58 am

I was inspired by a few comments in the Zombies thread to create this poll. You see, I have the long-held and vastly unoriginal belief that Marmite have created a very clever ad campaign, managing to convince half of the population that they must absolutely love Marmite, even though they probably only like it a bit. It also has become the perfect example to use when comparing something controversial, so that like Hoover, Google and Virgin, it is used commonly when referring to something else, providing free, ever-lasting advertising.

Or maybe people genuinely only love it or hate it, and I am in a minority who really only likes it on a cheese toasty, and find it generally okay but nothing special. Who knows? Well, we will soon. To the polls, fellow forumites, and let's put this question to bed!

Marmite is a disgusting mess, a heinous crime against taste and utterly inferior to the heavenly nectar that is Vegemite.

Marmite is awesome. Butter and Marmite on crackers is one of my snack staples, it also adds a bit of depth to gravy and it's useful for frightening Americans with (a couple of forum members have either been converted or terrified, depending! :hehe: )

I understand they're entirely different and the NZ version is apparently a bit bland by all accounts. If I understand correctly, in descending order of mouth-burningness, it's Marmite (English) -> Vegemite -> Marmite (NZish).

One problem with Marmite is that it's inadvisable to eat it when on MAOI antidepressants as it can result in certain undesirable side-effects such as death. Same as with cheddar. I forgot about this, so the first thing I ate after starting a course of MAOIs was a mature cheddar & Marmite sandwich.

If it's any consolation, I'm sure your doctor would have gotten a chuckle out of it. Tinged with sadness, of course. Probably.

How about "I've never tried it" option?
I should have bought some when I was in the UK, but I forgot. I'm not sure where I could even find it here. I hear it's available here and there, but not reliably and I've never seen it in any of those places, so.

I've never heard of Marmite. I had to Google to find out what it was. Wikipedia doesn't make it sound very appetizing (..."a sticky, dark-brown food paste...")

I have a proper cupboard- it do have Marmite and Vegemite. And you can't beat Marmite crisps, as long as you are fore-armed with Rennies just in case.

Oh, and squeezy jars are a prime example of what happens when you try to fix something that works just dandy already.

Yes, you should have! I can send you some, you can torment your friends with it! Well, assuming you don't mind them no longer being your friends...

I kinda like the squeezy bottles of it as it reduces my tendency to make a terrible mess, though it stops squeezing out and just makes farty noises when it's still about a quarter full, annoyingly. And, yeah, Marmite crisps are teh awesome. As are Worcester sauce flavoured Wheat Crunchies.
