Bluray and DVD the last Physical Medium?

Post » Sat Nov 01, 2014 12:25 pm

They can't be serious that DVD and Bluray are going to be the last physical mediums can they?

Aren't customers that don't rely on the internet ( PSN and X-Box Live) to download games on to their game system going to have a tantrum should something like this happen?

I mean, I personally like the Physical Medium because I'd rather have the game on disc rather than it taking up space on my hard drive. But thats just me.

Who are "they"?

But yeah, http://www.pcr-online.biz/news/read/digital-sales-make-up-92-of-global-game-revenues/034551, and that's steadily going up for movies too with services like Netflix, iTunes and so on. Which is unfortunate, as I'm rather fond of physical mediums and have over 1000 movies on DVD/blu-ray, and digital services rarely (if ever) offer any behind the scenes documentaries and similiar stuff which I enjoy watching.

Still, neither DVD or blu-ray will vanish anytime soon, they are still strong formats, if slightly bit weaker than they used to.

They will probably be the last physical medium, but that doesn't mean they'll go away entirely. Just means that the advances in digital distribution and the constant evolution of networking that reaches farther everyday that the overall need for them will diminish.

I like a physical medium too as it gives you more freedom, but how long will it be that a digital copy isn't easily accessable from wherever I go?
Maybe it's already here in some form, but it isn't mass produced or viable yet to the masses. Look at the PSTV device and what it can do now. It's literally the size of an index card and you use it to stream your PSN access to any device that you can plug it into via an HDMI. But take it a step further, a small device which has all your game access and you don't even need internet access to use it. Just download your files on to it and off you go, ready to play the same stuff wherever you are.

As it stands, BluRay and DVD can be used by pretty much everybody and it still remains the best way to obtain a game and play it for the greatest number of people. Digital distribution isn't far behind, but not close enough which is why they won't go anywhere anytime soon. It's just you won't see a physical medium that is any better than a BR.

I don't see Blu Ray going anywhere anytime soon. It's here to stay.

I doubt they will be the last physical medium.

ISP's in some countries and locations have strict bandwidth caps and possibly slow connection and likely not be able to compete with the ever increasing size of games to be downloaded.

The amount of physical distribution will be more limited since they do want you to download it.

The next physical media will be flash. One day we'll be able to take our own flash drives into a store, plug it into the register and download a copy of the media we purchased. This will work for all forms of entertainment from music to movies to games. Flash is getting to be so cheap that all of these forms will no doubt also be available on preloaded drives with little to no increase in cost.

I was meaning Corporations or productions that manufacture dvd and bluray.

I am wondering though if we'll see another upgraded format of medium though.

They will always make Blueray and DVD physical releases, it's just the sales will be less for them than the physical. As stated there are reasons that folks will want physical disks for their entertainment and games, but more and more are going the digital route.

Besides, I don't think they have an economical way to load a 4K movie up on a single disk. Not that 4K is really that good of a standard as it's not that much better than 1080 in actual viewing. Unless you have a huge TV that you sit too close to.
