How do you express sarcasm over the internet?

Post » Mon Nov 03, 2014 11:03 am

I've just read yet another chain of comments that stemmed from the ol' "I was sarcastic" argument.

How do you express sarcasm in your comments? Now, making sarcastic replies are relatively easier; I simply use short exaggerated sentences to convey a withering tone as such: 'Sure. Do it. I'm sure everyone would be astonished by your XXX'. Making a sarcastic first comment seems to be harder, I tend to use lots of farfetched and overblown words, and maybe with a tard expression at the end like 8D (its a smiley, not really a popular one).

Some people just go something like 'His singing's so fake, he must be using auto-tune...' and then when confronted with the absurdity of their comment(it was an old video, there definitely wasn't any auto-tune) they go 'can't you understand sarcasm?'

Wasn't involved in any of that though, just felt that the comment had nearly zero sarcasm in it. Im betting some people just use it as an excuse for their past foolishness that they're unwilling to admit to.

Very rarely I'll miss a sarcastic point, but in general I don't need a tip to catch sarcasm or give it, it's generally fairly obvious when sarcasm is at play. If they can't keep up with sarcasm, they get left behind.

This is what I do most of the time too. Occasionally, if I think the sarcasm ought to be particularly obvious, I may just use the whistling emote after the last sentence: :whistling:

But you have to be careful when you go for subtlety. Some people are unable to pick up on humor in its written form unless you really hit them over the head with it.

Ending the sentence with  helps.

But generally, written sarcasm is generally quite a lot worse than vocal sarcasm and raise the chance of missunderstandings quite a bit, and should therefore be kept away from internet as much as possible IMO. Especially on forums like these where everyone you're communicating with is a stranger.

are you being sarcastic right now? When I use sarcasim I try to be as painfully obvious as possible so there would be no confusion at all but there have been cases were people didn't know I was using it which goes down a funny rabbit hole.
