Having a gaming dilemma :(

Post » Thu Nov 06, 2014 8:15 am

So I recently built my own PC. It's amazing, it can run pretty much anything on Ultra, and I love it to death. I also have a PS4...

My brother in law loves his PS4 too, and we play stuff together (Namely Destiny right now, bc that's the only game I have..) and when Dragon Age: Inquisition comes out, he wants me to get it for the PS4 so we can do co op together, etc.

But..then..the PC..it's just sitting here with only the 3 Elder Scrolls titles to play..I really want to build up my PC library..I mean The Crew and DA:I is coming out for both the PC and PS4..and I don't know what system to get them for!!!!! Has anyone else has this first world crisis problem??

BTW, what types of games play better on the PC? Racing Games, RPG's, Shooters..which games are generally better suited for the PC and which are better suited for a console? And BTW, please, no versus wars. This is not a PC vs Console thread. Keep it within the forum rules!

Well, if i were you i would go for PS4. I think Co-op with a friend is easily worth some loss of performance and graphical fidelity!

Well I have some what of the same dilemma. I have been an Xbox man since the original launched years ago and I currently own an Xbox 360 and play many games with my friends (at least I did when they still played it). Either way most of my friends bought an Xbox One but I don't want to buy one because I feel like the PlayStation 4 is the superior console out of the two and overall I just prefer it. The dilemma here is only one of my friends will be buying a PlayStation 4 for sure and he works a lot so there is a slim chance we will get a chance to play it together. But I will be buying a PlayStation 4 because he is the only friend that I talk to on a somewhat regular basis and since I have no friends in real life that play video games I can always make new friends on the PlayStation.

So all I can tell you to do is go where your friends are and where you'll feel more comfortable at, your PC or PlayStation 4 are not going anywhere and if you chose to play one you can always go back to the other a year or two down the line and play the games you wanted to on them. Video games are not going anywhere and these next generation of consoles are going to be around for awhile. So don't feel like you are going to be left behind because there is always the opportunity to jump into the fray.

The good thing about PC is Steam. Particularly when it has deals on really great games, that may or may not be old. For example I picked up some games recently. Tomb Raider (The Reboot) and Vampires the Masquerade for less than 4 American dollars.

Your problem is the fact that you have friends and family that mainly have consoles. Which means you'll be splitting your game library between two systems. And you have to accept that fact.

That's not a bad thing, well unless you'd like to have a game on both systems. Then that's extra cash to spend. It just means that your PC will be primarily a single player system. Or for games your friends aren't really interested in, yet you are. And if you wait you'll pick up some fun and classic games for quite the deal.

If it were me playing with a friend, or in this case brother in law, on a console would trump the advantages the PC version has.

I agree here 100%. You're gonna have so much fun playing with someone else. I've played both PC and console for decades and it always works out.

A agree with WONDERWOMBATP.

PC for single-player, and if you want to play on-line, a console is the way to go. !!!

----------------

Consoles having the upper hand if it comes to the factor: "easy".

Meaning the majority of people out there wants it easy.

Having a console at your home, you just plug it into your TV and Internet, and the rest of your setup is simple, on-screen commands.

With a PC there are many more steps to do, and generally someone should have at least a bit of a PC knowledge. !!!

And the most people out there, actually don’t care how a system works as long as it works.

-------------------

But there is another factor, as other people above mentioned:

The factor that If you want to play a game on-line, you are going to go where your friends are. !!!

You may be a hardcoe gamer and love your PC to death, but if your friends all play on consoles, you are going to get a console. !!!

There is no other way...

---------------

Then there is the factor cost. If you know from computers, you can build a gaming rig for a few hundred dollars, but it will be relatively inexpensive.

So it wouldn't be much more than a console has to offer.

Even If you build a powerful gaming rig today, in order to make the most of your PC, you will be forced regularly to buy new hardware parts,

if you want to keep up, with the higher gaming demands in the future.

See, here's the thing. I'm gonna play devil's advocate here. Co-op in an RPG sounds good on paper, but I find it strongly detracts from the experience. You're meant to go at your own pace, read everything, explore, and so on. Hard to do that if the other person just wants to move on. PC also isn't just graphics and performance. DA:O was a fairly mod-able game, and you lose that bonus on consoles.

That said, this ultimately comes down to what you value. If you enjoy playing with your brother in law and your play styles match up nicely, then go for it. Another thing you can do is get The Crew on PS4 and DA:I on PC (Driving games are WAY better with a controller). But you shouldn't buy a game on a console just because you don't have many games for it. Weigh up the pros and cons, and make your decision based on that.

Generally, games designed for controllers (racing, sports, platformer, JRPGs, "action") games are better on console. While games that work better with mouse & keyboard (RTS, simulation, WRPGs, FPS, etc) are better on PC.

Of course, with so many PC games supporting controllers, that gets a bit more vague. And, of course, expect some of the "I'm great on FPS with a controller!" crowd to chime in (personally, I can't aim worth crap without a mouse, but hey...)

re: post above - yeah, I can't imagine playing a Bioware RPG multiplayer - need to take my time reading text windows, choosing dialogue options, etc. Of course, isn't the multiplayer in DA:I supposed to be similar to ME3's? i.e, not intruding much on the main gameplay, but a separate gameplay mode? (unlike, say, Divinity Original Sin, whose MP mode is full co-op for the story)

I agree with you here, I have trouble playing with a lot of people in any game because I take my time and get immersed in the game. While most of the people I play with are acting like their life depends on the timely completion of a 100+ hour game in 15 minutes. So while I like the idea of co-op in DA: I I will most likely ignore it, I prefer single player games much more than multi-player games.

There's a difference if you're playing a game for the mechanics, or for the immersion. Of course, you can achieve both, but for true co-op immersion, voice-chat would have to stay in-character and lore-friendly, which takes us into a "weird area" for most people.
