I can't open the bsa files to mod?

I might be doing something wrong, this was before I even started modding. When I looked in my data folder for Skyrim, some of the files (.bsa) were black with green "exec" written at the top. It's not letting me open them to add mods, since they aren't technically folders. If I double click on them, it would ask me how I wanted to convert it, then give me a list of things I could convert it to. The one it automatically lit up was "unicode text", and scrolling through others it basically looked like it wanted it in a text format. I didn't want to do anything yet, since I'm not sure whether converting it would screw everything up. I can't use any mods if they aren't in folders. I've tried making my own folders, but they don't really work. I've only managed to get one mod and that's to kill children. I'm not complaining about that mod, I really enjoyed killing the Jarl's annoying kid, but the other mods I had manually installed won't work in the folders I had made to try to match the .bsa folders already made that aren't working.

And I'm really hoping I'm not writing this in the wrong section. And that this is making sense. But any help would be appreciated.
