Texas Fan Lore

This is my first attempt at fan lore/ fan fic so bear with me

Texas Introduction(Think like game intros, or like the Storyteller form Shoddycast)
They say everything is bigger in Texas, and that phrase still holds true today. Bigger fortunes to be made, bigger land to dominate, bigger violence, and bigger greed.

Before the bombs fell, Texas was rapidly being developed by the military to become the base they needed for the fight against the Chinese. From research stations and bunkers, to dams and bridges. Texas also saw the burgeoning economic warfare between the dwindling oil companies and the similarly struggling green energy companies. Not much is left of these pre war institutions besides what they constructed.

It is said though, that under the Texas soils there are great monoliths built in pre war times. Not Vaults, something else. They are known as Cibola, or the Seven Cities of Gold to many. The major factions believe they're several giant underground military bases that could shift the balance of power, many believe they're holy sites that no man should enter, and some believe that they're simply myths. Regardless of whether they're one of these or some combination of all 3, they've drawn much conflict around them.

The Brotherhood of Steel came here in force, eager to harvest these lands for the power and wealth that could be found. That eagerness tore them apart and separated them into different groups. What remained of the original Brotherhood, battered and broken from their conflict, merged forces with the Texas Rangers. A force almost as small as the now defunct Brotherhood, they strive for good in a harsh world, a seemingly impossible task.

When the Brotherhood of Steel split, a new brotherhood arose. The new "Golden" Brotherhood rose to claim a vast sum of territory, and rule out of what they proclaim to be a "City of Gold". This statement alone subdues many, despite there being no official confirmation of this claim. Even though they call themselves "golden", they're not exactly a benevolent force. The liberal Brotherhood practices of strict recruitment have descended into a large scale recruitment of raiders and degenerates, bound loosely by promises of wealth to be extracted from the populace and old ruins. They no longer just seek technology, they're bent on dominating as much as possible and sapping as much wealth from those they rule in order to pay off their members and continue growing. This barbarism has contributed their armor gradually becoming more like the NCR salvaged armor from the lack of scribes.

There are several other groups out there though. In the previous decades, Brahmin Barons ruled much of the land, but now many have been displaced or destroyed by the growing violence. Several survive in the more rural regions, but even those are under threat from the search for Cibola. Many villages and towns also dot the landscape, with almost as many different attitudes as there are villages. Many welcome the loose protection given by the Texas Rangers and openly support them with recruits, but almost just as many are confident their isolation and hardiness will protect them, despite the number of towns with similar ideals consumed by the Golden Brotherhood. And oppositely, there are many who submit to the Golden Brotherhood out of fear. These towns are not unlike the old west towns they seem to resemble at first thought, but many have an uncanny similarity to old west towns. It almost seems intentional.

Several Native American tribes also make their place in the vast rural landscape of Texas. They started the nuclear apocalypse on the brink of falling into disorder and ruin like everyone else, and like they had done in the past. But a group of charismatic shamans traveled between the Texas reserves and managed to convince them that it was the time to return to the old ways. Now tribes continue in much the same way they did hundreds of years ago in and around Texas, mostly peacefully interacting with the people of the wastes.

They say "war never changes". Words whispered by old story tellers across the nation, not unlike the old stubborn phrase: "Everything is bigger in Texas". Words that still have relevance, today and tomorrow. Especially in the coming storm.

Suggestions? ideas? Like it?

I have a few notes for my homebrew tabletop campaign on mutated hazards that the players could encounter as they trekked across the wasteland...

Armadillos

Once small and a problem to drivers throughout the state the armadillo has since mutated by radiation and FEV exposure into a much larger version of its former self.

Texas Long Horn

Bred and descended from a species of Spanish cattle the Texas Long Horn is the predominate species of cattle found and since mutated by radiation and FEV exposure in Texas. Like its Brahmin cousin some Long Horn have two heads.
