A question of field of view

Post » Fri Dec 05, 2014 5:34 pm

Following PCGamingWiki's instructions I edited my Fallout_default.ini file and set the value of fDefaultFOV= to 105.3000 (optimal for 16:9 monitor). After that the game was much more pleasant to play. But I'm not sure if the FOV value is actually 105 because when I type value 105 to console FOV becomes much wider.

Example:

FOV set to 105.3000 in Fallout_default.ini: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=130B665BF39DFD1!4369&authkey=!ABg-04F6Yoi4Csw&v=3&ithint=photo%2Cpng

After typing the FOV value 105 to console: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=130B665BF39DFD1!4370&authkey=!AKKAXtlU06WYA1I&v=3&ithint=photo%2Cpng

Also, there are several other FOV related lines in Fallout_default.ini. I haven't edited them. fDefault1stPersonFOV=55.0000 refers to gun position and to the character's body but I'm not sure of the others. All attempts to improve my experience on PC will be appreciated.

fPipboy1stPersonFOV=47.0

fDefault1stPersonFOV=55.0000

fRenderedTerminalFOV=0.15

I'm not sure how that's possible as that ini file does nothing for the game itself. It's only used as a template when the game has to create the functional ini file from scratch. The one the game actually uses is found in your Documents/My Games/FallouNV folder.

OK, also in that location my FOV is set to 105.3000 (Fallout.ini). Haven't edited it myself.

I don't think the FOV setting sticks. I think you have to do it each time you launch the game.

To see if it does stick, open the console and set the FOV setting to whatever is different than your INI has now. Then type saveini, exit the game, look and see if the INI was changed. Then, launch the game and see if the FOV is what you set it to or the default value. If it is not, then look at the INI to see what is there.

What's happening there is that the working ini file gets overwritten whenever you use the regular game launcher. So it's copying the "default" values you set in the game folder. Which works out OK for your purposes, but if you were to use the NVSE launcher to start the game instead, you would need to make the changes you want in the Documents/My Games folder, not in the Fallout_default.ini. Just something to keep in mind. It's been so long since I've used the default launcher that I had forgotten how it works.

I don't use the default launcher. I start my game via FNV4GB.

And FOV changes made by using console do not stick.

After setting FOV to 105 using New Vegas Configurator the only thing I noticed is that now I can view my character from ridiculously far away: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=130B665BF39DFD1!4384&authkey=!AK9nGvFIecYJtyo&v=3&ithint=photo%2Cpng

Also, mouse movement becomes incredible slow and "warping" is awful after NVC. FOV settings somehow override each other. And at this time the field of view narrows when I put the FOV value of 105 to console. New Vegas Configurator isn't infallible. The tool incorrectly stated that shadows and anti-aliasing were off.

EDIT: FNV seems to change both fDefaultFOV and fDefaultWorldFOV.
