What are your guys thoughts on video game rentals?

Post » Fri Dec 05, 2014 6:12 pm

I have a PS4 and I just bought the Unity Xbox One bundle with the Master Cheif Collection and a year of Live. I also recently subscribed to Gamefly. Because that is the only way I am going to be able to play all the games that I want to play. I have 50 games in my queue and I could fill it with a ton more. I use to love buying Steam Sale games when I had a gaming rig, I own over 180 PC games. But the sad fact is once I play and beat a game it just sits there and I do nothing with it.

Having Gamefly I can play the latest games with out waiting 6+ months for a price drop and when I am done with it. I just turn it in and get a new game. I feel like in the long run I am getting better value for my money because I can play the latest games why they are still relevant and not yesterdays old news. What are your thoughts on video game rentals?

first, Welcome to the Forums!

I don't rent games, I would rather buy them New and have the money go towards the actual people that made it, rather than spending a few bucks to borrow it from a Store where you have absolutely no idea where that case or Disc has been..

(on a side note, did the second half of the OPs post sound like an Advertisemant to anyone else? or is it just me?)

I haven't rented a game since the PS1 era. Back then I would rent the same games multiple times, so it didn't really save me any money. Plus, I like to own my games, so I can go back and replay them whenever I want.

Yeah, I haven't rented since the SNES days. But nowadays it's more a case of too many games, too little time. Humble Bundles & Steam sales certainly don't help. (Along with being a fan of open-ended games that you can mess around in forever).

...and that gives me my answer. Most of the games I want to play these days are long & rambling. Rentals would be a terrible way to play them. If I were a fan of those 6-hour action games, it'd be something to consider, but wtih 100+ hour games - meh, not so much.

I have fond memories of me and my mates going to the video store and picking out PS2 games to rent based entirely on their cover art and then playing them all night.

I haven't rented a video game now in probably close to 10 years.

I don't rent games. I don't have to only play the latest releases, and i don't mind waiting for a bit to get them so the price drops (not to mention, once most of the release day bugs have been patched out). I have no problem replaying old favorites whenever I get the urge to.

I like to own my own games too, so I buy the ones I know I want to keep.

It's been awhile for me too, but when I buy a game for $60 and I am sick of it in a month and trade it in for $30 I am losing out big time. I should be able to run 4+ games a month through Gamefly and that's going to save me $215 a month. It just makes sense to rent if I don't plan on keeping the game. But I do plan on buying the games that I know I am going to want to keep, I wanted the Master Chif Collection and I know I am going to keep it so I bought it. I know I am going to play the heck out of Dragon Age so I bought it, and I will be buying the Witcher 3, ect. But games like Tomb Raider that is a 12 hour game and I know I am never going to play it again after the first play through, it just makes sense to rent it.

The last game I ever rented was The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the N64 back in the late 90's. Since then Iv always bought games in the bargain bin, and was always paranoid about damaging discs after the cartridge went out of fashion. Of course now that I'm pretty much PC only it's kind of a moot point...I usually wait for a steam or Gamersgate sale.

I too have fond memories of renting N64 games from Blockbuster and Rogers Video every Friday night. In retrospect there were a few I probably should've purchased (or got purchased for me) since I kept renting them over and over again (Pokemon Snap comes to mind). The best part was finding games with really advanced saves on them :P

Still rent, mostly to see if the game is worth a purchase and if I find it fun, and sometimes some games are easily beaten in few hours and not worth a full purchase.

Gamefly is very nice. :)

I used to rent only on SNES and before anyone says you're only 19 yrs old, well by the time ps 2 was around its price was 1250 dollars and PSOne 600. Not to mention converting it to our currency the price would "double" for us. So in late 99s I had a SNES.

Curious that I just watched a cable TV commercial with the same typing :P

Yes me to.

An also my last few memories of console rental games were a stack higher than me and someone copying them before the boss caught them, and someone putting my name as their contact without my knowing renting a a pile of games and moving town.

But also then again im a PC game player.

A little yes.

I was about to question this until I glanced at your location...do job wages match the crazy cost of merchandise?

Oh and the same as with others, I haven't rented anything in ages.

It doesn't. Minimum wage is 753 BR Currency. Something around 435 dollars. And depending of our almost commie ruling party PT it might get worse. Buut that's life. Latin America is a horrible place o live aside Chile and Paraguay. I don't hate my country, but there is nothing to be much proud of. Anyway, this delay was good in some way, after all, how many 19 yrs old knows who Haggar is? :D

I could say the same about my country but that's a different discussion....and Haggar is a boss, if you don't know who the mustached mayor is then you better ask somebody :P

I've never rented games although I have nothing against it. I tend to buy most games new to avoid the aggravation of scratched discs etc. When I buy them I also always insist that they are sealed so that I'm not palmed off with any damaged returns.
