Is it possible to get Daggerfall to run better?

I recently bought the Elder Scrolls Anthology and recently started playing Daggerfall. It is old, but I enjoy it. However I feel like my enjoyment would be so much higher if the game actually ran better. For some reason it runs very well when outdoors, but as soon as you enter a locale it begins to run really slow, and I mean frame by frame slow, about 5 fps maybe. Especially things like taverns. Dungeons seems to run okay, if they are not to big. The lag really hurt the experience, is there any way to have it run better? I see no reason why it should not when running on a computer that can run Skyrim maxed with mods?

It runs like crap because DOS is an entirely different beast compared to modern computers, and DOSBox can only help so much.

Try installing http://uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Files from here instead of the packaged Anthology version; it comes with unofficial patches that might help out performance, and if nothing else fix some major bugs left in the final version of Daggerfall. More importantly, it comes with a preconfigured DOSBox (so does the anthology version; whether there are any differences in settings I don't know) that's designed specifically for running Daggerfall.
