Your Savefile Size

Post » Mon Dec 08, 2014 10:52 pm

The vanilla game should be somewhere ~5MB. Most of the bloating issues with the base game have been addressed through the USKPs. Granted I am pushing a ton of mods. However, I consider myself to be a fairly responsible mod user and try my best to configure as stable of a game as possible.

Nonetheless, I noticed my current savefile size to be to be growing, as expected. It has surpassed the 10MB mark and hovers between 10.2 and 10.4MB. This accompanies a total gametime of 109hrs.

I was wondering where other members savefiles were topping out and how many mods they may or may not be running.

My largest savefile so far was 11,9 MB after 85 hours play time. Didn't have very large amount of mods back then (up to 50) but I've done a quite lot of quests with that character (all vanilla questlines + halfway through Dawnguard). It was some time ago on a much worse PC than I have now, and still didn't experience any negative outcomes with the save growing slowly.

The size of my last save is 10.5 megs. 64 hours. The unofficial patches and 36 other mods. The game ran fine as far as I was concerned: no unusual crashes or freezes.

The virginal 360 save file of my main Dragonborn is like 10.5MB (level 40-ish). My non-Dragonborn's 360 file is at 13MB (level 73).

Most of my new modded characters are around that area even at early levels, but never over 15MB. They also tend to have nearly 200 mods running at once.

I've only ever had trouble with poor mod installation and buggy mods in general. Frequent CTD's and corrupted saves (the kind that don't let you save again). After cleaning up my load order and deleting/updating buggy mods most of my games run smoothly. (I don't think I'm ever touching Sands of Time ever again, though)

Utilizing my very week Google-Fu, these savefile sizes are all over the place, ranging from 6 to 60+. What is considered to be excessive?

Then again, it's only excessive if you have lag and crash issues, I'd imagine.

I had a stable, modded game at 14-15 MB. I wouldn't worry about anything under 20 MB unless it was a vanilla or near vanilla playthrough, which typically never reaches this size. Generally speaking, if the size grows gradually, it's unlikely to be a problem - sudden jumps are suspicious. Yours look okay.

My saved games are about 13.5 MB on my character's current playthrough of about 450 hours. I run all DLC and unofficial patches, plus about 35 other mods. Everything works fine.

My save game size is around 26-27 MB, it is a vanilla save, at a little over 500 hours, with a number of mods (probably around 30), though mostly only new lands and quests mods. It's stable, no problems.

In an unmodded game, I would think any save file that is 12MB to 13MB or less to be OK, it can even be a bit bigger than that depending on how much content you have uncovered. Although one of the patches helped with save bloat by cleaning up weapons laying around after a battle. The people who were seeing the really large (20MB plus) save files were on consoles and that was related to some issue on the PS3 as the 360 did not see this kind of bloat.

In a lightly modded game, 12 to 15 MB is a good size and I have no issues with any of my saves. But I also create new save slots and never overwrite a save slot more than 5 times and never use or load an Autosave.

These are the same techniques I adopted on the console version. I have had autosave disabled since DB released. I started moving all but my last save to an outside folder before each game session.

My main issue is lag and stuttering. I have an occasional CTD, when I update and reorganize my mods. I tend to set up the game for a number of different character potentials. Werewolf and Vampire mods are there to be activated within the MCM menu, if they become one. I will run a character for a 150 hrs to confirm stability and then create serious characters for 6 months before reworking from newer mods.

I only started looking into my file size because of the stuttering. Making sure I have the SKSE ini updated with...

[General]ClearInvalidRegistrations=1

As far as completed content, I'm half way through the TG questline for the first time. I also have about 50 active quests. Either way, I should be conscious of the file size. Especially during this "testing" playthrough.

My current save is sitting at about 11.5 MB. I've got a base game save sitting around at 12.8 MB, which I think is the largest one.

I have two of the DLC's, and my save files seem to top out at 13-14 MB. My longest game is only 226 hrs, though.

I am running around 150 Mods, My new Saves start at just over 6MB, My largest Save is almost 16MB. I use Open Cities Skyrim and do get timed pauses that are due to Script based Mods scanning NPC's entering the Towns from Buildings.

I get some CTD's when loading a Saved Game, and an Autosave may load and then crash after a few seconds.

I have been using an SKSE.ini with the Memory Block changes, and ENBoost for the last Year.

My PC save that I've spent 65 hours on is almost 10MB. I have about 50 mods installed (including Unofficial Patches & DLCs). My load times are still GREAT! (SSD)

My old PS3 save that I spent 450ish hours on was 20MB! The load times took FOREVER!!

19MB.

Once you visit every area in Skyrim, the save file will "normalize" and not grow anymore, bouncing between values as you revisit previously loaded cells. This a gradual bloat from game start that is nothing to worry about. Adding mods will of course add a "tax" to the file size. If you get really large file sizes like 50MB or something and it keeps going up and up when you know you've been everywhere in the game, and haven't downloaded a mod in a long time, it is most likely a mod causing the bloat.

Mine is sitting at 14.3 MB at 91 hours played. That is with all DLC + Unofficial Patches + some intensive mods+ a bunch of little mods. (Open Cities, Vilja, Better Vampires) I have no doubt that they boost the size significantly. Especially BV seeing how I turned 50 people or so.

I'm using 250 plugins. I have 533 mods ticked in Mod Organizer. 20 of them are marked grey (they are completely overwritten and are doing nothing), so really I've got 513 that are in use.

Heavily modded game. Lots of scripted stuff. Lots of high texture mods.

7,483kb - 1 hour, 6 minutes and 13 seconds.

Will edit this post when I've reached 5 hours.

~10 Meg. ~10Hrs into the game. About a hundred mods. Aside from some aesthetics mods (No more blocky faces for example) not much on the texture department.
