Should I give Morrowind a try?

Hi everyone!

I am a HUGE fan of the Elder Scrolls games and have played Oblivion and Skyrim to death, (with Oblivion being my favourite) I've even played some Daggerfall, and (surprisingly) quite enjoyed it... but I have never tried Morrowind.

When people mention Morrowind they often say "Oblivion/Skyrim can't hold a candle to Morrowind!" and "Morrowind>>>>>>>>>Oblivion>Skyrim" which got me intrigued as I find Oblivion/Skyrim to be very fun and enjoyable games. As I am sure most of you know, the Steam Holiday Sale is coming up and I am hoping to get some games, Morrowind being one of them. So I'd like to know whether Morrowind is more like Daggerfall, I am a bit of a filthy casual :yucky: so I found it quite hard to get into the heavily stat-driven and complex game (I enjoyed it in the end though!), or is it more like Oblivion? Also is it worth buying? (stupid question I know :D)

I just want to ask any fellow :tes: players for their opinions on this game and to give me an idea of the game mechanics (combat, stats etc.) I could just look it all up, but (like I said) I'd like to get the opinions of people who have played the game.

Many thanks in advance!

Morrowind is not nearly as complex or stat ridden as Daggerfall, but it is more complex than Oblivion by a country mile. You have much more freedom to do what you want in Morrowind. There are no essential characters and the quests often have many ways you can complete them. There is no quest arrow or fast travel, but there are in game travel options and teleportation.

And of course, there a re lots of mods, including graphical mods to make the game look stunning, although some players prefer the original low res look. The world is beautifully crafted and different regions have a very different feel to them. That is a big change from Daggerfall's sprite graphics with more or less uniform world. Morrowind is much more like Oblivion or Skyrim than Dafferfall when it comes to exploring the world.

If you do get Morrowind, be mindful of your fatigue. The green bar matters a lot more in Morrowind than later games. Most people who complain about Morrowind combat are either using a weapon their character has absolutely no skill in or are fighting when their character is exhausted. Neither is a particularly good idea, since you will almost never land a hit under those circumstances.

But pick a weapon skill as a major skill, and use that type of weapon when you engage in combat and make sure to keep your green bar full, and you will hit well more than half of the time. Once your weapon skill gets to about 50, you will almost always hit, unless your fatigue bar is very low.

Yes, giove Morrowind a try, but be prepared for a slightly different experience to Oblivion and Skyrim.

But just approach it with an open mind, it's not the be-all-and-end-all some people on these forums make it out to be, but it is very good and very enjoyable. I would recommend the Code Patch (Or whatever it is these days) as it fixes a lot of the random crashing that Morrowind was plagued by (Worse than Oblivion or SKyrim) as well as any unofficial patches, but otherwise, I'd reccomend an almost vanilla playthrough for the first time.

Yes, try Morrowind. Keep in mind that you will completely svck at combat until you get better. The devs kind of left out the "enemy dodges" animation, so many times it will look like your weapon goes right through your opponent. Imo, it more than compensates in other areas.

It is worth it. I still play.
