What happens to Shadowmere if I get Frost?

What will happen to Shadowmere if I get Frost?

Also, do both horses respawn if they die?

Shadowmere stays at the pool you originally got him from. But only Shadowmere can respawn, other than Ardvark (Dawnguard DLC).

If I take Shadowmere when I get him, what happens to Frost? Will he just disappear?
