Just got a canned call from the "IRS" stating that a lawsuit has been filed against me. I was given a 1-206 phone number to call for details. I knew this as a coax so had no intention of following through. I did, however, look it up online. Sure enough, it's making the rounds now (and in another form did so earlier in the year). I suspect all who participate here are wise to this sort of thing. However, if you know folk who are susceptible to scams and hoaxes it might be a good idea to give them a heads up and avoid potential grief.

Yeah, I have had a person claiming to be IRS agent Julie Smith leaving messages for me all week, saying I need to call her back to discuss my return in order to avoid any further action. The voice sounded a bit odd, with awkward pauses between every word, like it was synthesized by stringing words together. Caller ID shows it as a 415 area code. The IRS is aware of this scam. I'm not sure what they can do to stop it though. It's definitely making the rounds again.

Yep, I had one of those calls saying they were the Mississippi branch of the IRS with a lawsuit. Sounded fishy but I played along and I asked them for their employee number and record's number file so I could check up on this with the IRS' HQ so I could get a copy of the case for reference purposes. They told me they must have had the wrong number and hung up right quick. Hehehe.

I can relate. During elections here we receive calls from the IBGE (Brazilian Geographical Institute) asking about my votes. Yeah, sure.
