The Linguistics of Tamriel

If this is not in the right forum, could a mod please move it? New here, so I'm assuming this goes here since it's sorta-lore related (but also sorta a fan creation, so yeah.)

'Ello all, and welcome to my own little lore project, if you will. When Skyrim was released, along with it came Dovahzul – the (strikingly similar to English) Dragon Tongue. One community, at Thuum.org, has taken this idea and completely ran with it, transforming it into its own, proper constructed language (although again, strangely similar to English).

Now... what if we were to do that with every single one of the Elder Scrolls languages? This is what I'd like to do. Make every single TES language constructed. It's very possible, in my mind. The human languages we should have no difficulty with, since we can match the ES language with a real-life language pretty easy. Redguards? Probably a Semitic language. Imperials? I have a feeling it'll look like Latin. Nords? Germanic. Bretons? Probably a Brythonic/Gallo-Romance mix.

Now, there are several ways to go about this: Build a history, starting from Proto-Ehlnofex, splitting off into all the modern Tamrielic languages. Or, we could invent the languages first from game sources (which for most languages are far and few between. I think the only “Cyrodilic” inscription (if it is Cyrodilic – I'm only guessing because it looks quite like Latin) is from the title of a book on vampires – Opusculus Lamae-Bal ta Mezzamortie, with a translation meaning “A brief account of Lamae-Bal and of the restless death”.

Please let me know what you think of this idea, and give your criticism if you have it.

Cyrodiilic is actually the linguistic equivalent of English, as in it's literally English. http://uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Ehlnofex_Languages is the best general breakdown of languages and their development in Tamriel.

The Altmer are credited with being the progenitors of modern culture, language, and art. Man is descended from Nedic peoples; the Nedic language probably mixed with the elven (or dragon, in the case of Nordic) language of their masters - Direnni (Altmer) in High Rock, and Ayleid in Cyrodiil. The Nords started their conquests of High Rock about the same time Alessia's Slave Rebellion started; my guess is that modern Cyrodiilic was forming around this time as the human races intermingled and established their cultures, while elven languages fell into obscurity. By the time the Yokudan Warrior Wave settled in Hammerfell, Cyrodiilic was the established language and they quickly adopted it.

The Elven languages are a bit different. We have a lot of info on the Falmer, Dwemer, and Ayleid languages. There's a lot of Falmer language in Skyrim and Dawnguard. Ayleid language is touched upon a lot in Oblivion, but not comprehensively. Dwemer language is present in the names of all of their strongholds, but it's almost incomprehensible to the layman. Chimer probably had their own language, too; Ashlanders and ancient ruins typically have very Mesopotamian-esque names, if not directly Mesopotamian, although they probably always used the Daedric alphabet in their written language. I don't know of any examples of Bosmeri language, but it's definitely a derivative of Altmeri language.

The beast races have their own things. We know some of the Khajiit language (Ta'Agra), but very little of the Argonian language, Jel.

Actually, there's a very well done speculation/pet project on the very subject http://www.imperial-library.info/content/hrafnirs-languages-nordic, and its well worth a going over. Might want to take a gander, since a lot of work has been put into it.

Huh. I had no idea the thing on the Imperial Library even existed. That's actually very interesting, and almost makes this thing pointless... Divines, I feel like an idiot when I don't check to see if someone's already done it, and it turns out someone has. Welp, this is... embarrassing.
