Just bought Skyrim: Where should I start?

Post » Sat Jan 03, 2015 5:47 pm

Hey everybody!

I just bought Skyrim Legendary Edition, and wanted to ask you guys for advice.

What do you think that everyone should know when playing the game? (I mean, in many games you gain knowledge after a certain while playing it, and sometimes you wish you'd have known it since the beginning - Is there such an important thing in Skyrim?)

Should I directly start modding the game, or play it "vanilla" first? When talking about Mods in the internet, Skyrim always is "the reference", so this question is pretty important to me. I read somewhere that it is better to start with the Vanilla Version and add some mods after playing a while?

So, yeah, those are my two questions :D .

Kind regards,

Flyverse

Half of me wants to tell you to mod the hell out of it...

The other half says you should play the game as it was intended first.

That being said, I'd go ahead and get the USKP (Unofficial Skyrim Patch), and any graphic-enhancing mods to your liking that your PC can handle. I could give you a bunch of mods of the top of my head that are absolute musts for me now, but I'll hold off unless requested.

As far as where to start in the game? Go left.

Edit: Oh, and someone will be around shortly to give you your complimentary Fishy Stick!

Of course there are a few exceptions to this rule. Unofficial Patches should always be installed. The so called "vanilla experience" is no excuse to suffer from bazillion of bugs.

Then there are a few disability removals...

Your best bet is to go vanilla + Unofficial Patches, and maybe even SkyUI if you'd like. Once you get a feel for the game you'll have a much better idea of what you want to change.

If your PC can handle it, visual enhancements are a good start.

There are some mods you should always have for bug fixes and stability. The Unofficial patches, Stable uGrids to load (this helps cell stability even if you keep uGrids at default), Brawls bug patch (compatibility version), an ENB for the memory hack and some graphical fixes (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/40729/? is fixes without messing with vanilla looks/colours) are good to have. I would recommend Relighting Skyrim too, lighting fixes without fancy effects.

External resources such as SKSE (includes the other memory patch, and allows SkyUI which in turns allows MCM which means you can alter the settings of MCM-enabled mods as and when you get them), Wrye Bash, LOOT and TESVEdit will allow you to get into good practice for retaining a stable game when you eventually get more mods.

Play vanilla and focus on the main quests.

Then go with the improvement mods (textures and fixes etc).

And finally work on changing things in the game to your liking.

The best advice one can bestow upon a new player to the series or the game itself, is to simply... just play. Exploration and discovery share as a dual core to the world of TES. No matter if its a MQ or a small side quest, react to the gameworld as your character would.

Use the UESP Wiki to reference a particular question. Otherwise, forget it or the forums exist.

However, it is strongly recommended that one utilize the Unofficial Patches, SKSE and SkyUI at the least. While this is technically not vanilla, do not simply undergo your adventures with the "off the shelf" stock vanilla version.

I assume the Legendary Edition includes the DLC's - i.e. Dawnguard, Dragonborn, and Hearthfire. I'd suggest not turning them on immediately, but experience the game without them first, just so you know what it's like that way. They're effectively mods produced by Bethesda, so you can take the mod/no-mod advice and apply it to those, too.

I'd suggest playing vanilla first.

Nothing, it's better to know as little as possible when playing the new game because it's much more interesting to find out things on your own instead of reading about them on Internet. IMO the less one knows about the game, the more he enjoys it.

One of my "mistakes" was that I watched too many trailers and saw how some cities looked like before even playing the game. This somehow ruined my first experience with Skyrim because I already knew how some cities and areas look like.

That first Skyrim playthrough is something very special. You only get to experience it one time. Dont waste it looking for the answers on the internet or asking for help here (of course we're all here to help). Explore, explore, explore and by all means EXPLORE!!!!

I wish someone would have told me about RP'ing (role playing) my characters when I first got the game. Might want to look into it. If you're interested I can give more information.
It basically a different way of playing the game.

I don't care much for "how it was intended" thing, but aside from unofficial patches, SkyUI, SSME and Enboost (bugs, performance and fixing the TERRIBLE UI system) you can't really decide which mods you want to use in your game without playing it for 40, 50 hours and the vannila game can easily provide you with awesome stuff to do in that time. So don't worry much.
Come to think of it, you might want to have iHUD from the get go.
For tutorials there are a lot of sources available, like S.T.E.P.S,, Gopher has good tutorials on youtube too.
