How can I go about removing grass from an area? I've painted over the textures for the squares but grass keeps showing up.

Yes, checked and made sure it isn't the static grass/shrubs.

You can't, it's hard coded to appear randomly. I believe the only way you can get rid of it is to turn it off in your ini file. Though it might work to move your game options slider to minimum as well.
