I was wandering around in the school near the giant ant tunnels and the game randomly crashed with a windows crash dialog.

I am using the Steam GOTY edition on Windows 7 (its a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium plus all the patches and updates for it Windows Update offered me)

My hardware:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 on Intel DP965LT

4GB RAM

Brand new Samsung EVO 840 SSD (where the OS and game is installed)

Brand new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750

Are there any stability fixes I should apply? Any other tips to prevent such crashes? Or did I just blow 20 bucks on a game that I cant really play?
