is there anyway to find out you're Dovahkin without going through the main storyline?

I don't think so. No one in Skyrim realizes we are Dovahkiin until we slay Mirmulnir.

In the Dawnguard Questline without being able to Shout, Durnheviir can sense the Dragonblood, and Harkon has some dialogue as well.
