Can anyone provide any modeling tips?

Hi guys, while Im not new to modding (Modded my own game enough) I am now in the process of trying to make my own mod, my own armor from scratch at that. Ive gone through the process of getting UNP (The body I plan on making this for) in to blender 2.49b (EVERYWHERE i look says this is the version to use even though its old), taking it through nifskope and then getting the hands feet and body into blender, removed the skeletons for both _0 and _1 model.

Now Il admit im a bit of a noob when it comes to 3D modeling, Ive read up so much on blender watched videos ect and no matter how much I try I for the life of me cannot mold anything into the shape I want it to be. In short does anyone have any tips they can provide or prehaps point in the direction of any further help?

I know im not going to get it right straight away and it will take time but the fact that I cant even make the rough shape of what I want drives me mad.
