Sound effects issues with external hard drives.

I know that there are issues with sound effects (like weapon sounds and shouts not working) when Skyrim is run off of an external hard drive - a quick google search makes that evident.

But is there any way to solve it, short of moving the Skyrim installation? My problem is that I've got two technically-internal hard drives connected to my motherboard, an SSD with the OS on it (and not enough leftover space for modded Skyrim), and a big old HDD that has all of my games on it. I've tried installing sound replacers, but still no dice. I know weapon sounds don't work, or barely work at all - I think footsteps weren't working either, and I didn't get far enough to find out if Dragon shouts worked.

Steam is installed on the SSD, but all of the games and mod tools are on the HDD. Thanks for any help.
