Character Back stories.

Post » Wed Mar 11, 2015 6:20 am

Hey so i wanted to start a thread where people can post up back stories for their current or favourite characters they played as in Fallout New Vegas, also it might give other people new roleplaying ideas for a fresher play through. Plus i know some people had to have come up with some cool back stories. I personally have a lot of different characters and a different back story for each person, some more in depth than others while some i left purposefully mysterious. So i'd like to see what kind of interesting back stories other people have come up with.

So, why don't you guys share your courier's back stories?

*Note, these are for backstories that fit with the canon in some way shape or form (as i know we have a non-canon backstory thread as well)

My Current courier's back story:

Grognak, the Barbarian. A holy scripture that is followed by the tribe of the Red Knuckles, a primitive tribal society with very little understanding of technology and the like, but warriors through and through. The Red Knuckles worship and follow the holy words of Grognak the Barbarian, a pre war series of books and stories, based off the true life of a legendary barbarian, Grognak who walked the earth several hundreds of years ago.

Grognak exterminated many a mythical creature off the face of the earth, ranging from Mammoths, to Sand Serpents, Dragons, Griffons and other various dangerous creatures. Of course, he didn't get them all. There are still many Deathclaws (dragonspawn), Cazadors, nightstalkers, Yao Guai and Super Mutants that still walk the earth, terrorizing humans everywhere.

The Red Knuckles tribe follows these stories, uses them as inspiration to keep the fight up, until all of the dangerous creatures of the earth are finally destroyed. The Red Knuckles revel in combat, and the greatest death a man can achieve is to die while fighting a worthy opponent. All of the Red Knuckles are warriors, Women, Children, Elderly (which is rare, as most people do not live long enough to be elderly), everyone. They do learn basic survival skills as well, but their lifeblood lies in combat, the way of the fist, and in the use of throwing weapons.

There are no neighbouring tribes to the red knuckles in their vast rolling hills, a place that was once called Kansas, as they have all been defeated in combat and now only one tribe remains. However, there are many other dangers they face in the forms of massive tornadoes and deadly creatures. The Red Knuckles do not fear these dangers though, they embrace them, as they make them stronger by surviving such a place, worthy to follow the teachings of Grognak the Barbarian.

Every 66 years, the first child born into the tribe that year is a reincarnation of the legendary Grognak, gifted with supernatural powers of a great warrior. These children, they get raised in the art of warfare and survival at a much younger age, and by the age of 8, they send the child off unarmed to a nearby cazador nest where they must go slay a full grown cazador using their warriors wits and they must bring back the head of the cazador to the tribe. If the child is successful, then they earn their name, Grognak, and become a legendary figure of the tribe, but not the chief of the tribe. As Grognak of old was a wandering warrior who slayed enemies far and wide, he was not burdened with the duties of leading a tribe and all of the restrictions and limitations that come with that, and so the new Grognak does is not burdened with such duties either.

If the child does not survive the test, then it is seen as an omen, that the next 60~ years will be years of darkness, a dark age for the tribe, an age of stagnation.

Such was the age the Red Knuckles were in. Their last Grognak did not survive the test, and so the last 60 years have been years of darkness. But this all changed with the new Grognak. Where his predecessor failed, He survived. And so an new golden age for the Red Knuckles was beginning again, with a new Grognak in the flesh.

And for many years the new Grognak slayed creatures and travelling raiders in the name of the Red Knuckles. He was a big and powerful warrior, with almost god like endurance, and a very strong arm. He favoured his fists, but he did use throwing weapons if he had to. Unfortunately, Grognak was not very smart, definitely not the most intelligent in his tribe, but he made up for it with his power and ferocity. Grognak also suffered from fear of small places, he did not like staying in caves too long and felt most comfortable under the open sky, of course he admitted this to no one, but deep down inside he hated this weakness.

On his 20th year, Grognak discovered that there had been a nest of Deathclaws that had recently shown up not too far from his tribal lands. So, just like the old Grognak, he set off to destroy this vile lair of monsters. He discovered the deathclaws living in a small canyon, a settlement of sorts, perhaps a pre war farmstead or ranch land of some kind. The Deathclaw scouts didnt see him coming, he got the jump on them and slayed the monsters before they could warn the rest. Using bottles of liquor, Grognak made some fire bombs, ones he threw into the canyon and started lighting the place aflame. Deathclaws ran around trying to put out the fire, and in the confusion he rushed them and slayed any in his path.

Eventually Grognak found the leader of the Deathclaws, then he realized they were different deathclaws then he as ever encountered. The deathclaw leader pleaded with him, said that they were not enemies and just wanted to live in peace somewhere. Of course, that didnt stay his hand, as the deathclaw pleaded for his life, Grognak took it from him without remorse, and burned down the settlement and any deathclaw eggs he found as well, as would the original Grognak would have done.

Leaving the flaming canyon in satisfaction, he set back out for his village. Upon returning, he noticed smoke clouds on the horizon, coming from his village. When he reached the village, he found it burned to the ground, piles of ash everywhere, no bodies to be seen. There was one survivor, a child of no more than 5. Grognak asked what happened, the child said that demons with eyes of flame, carapace of steel and spears of light passed through the village, burning and killing everyone. They went to the village treasury, where old pre war technologies were gathered and stored by the tribe, though the tribe didnt know how to use pre war technologies, they knew they were valuable and held onto them, as artifacts of the old world. Those technologies proved to be their downfall, as the demons that came through were looking for artifacts such as these, and were willing to kill to get them.

Grognak, with nothing to do, nowhere to go, set off in a random direction, abandoning the surviving child to his fate (as is their way, the way of the warrior). He seeked vengance, knowing that there were demons out there who could turn people to ash, he wanted to find them and destroy them.

After a few months of travelling, Grognak came upon a settlement, with many technologies, he thought these people might be responsible for the death of the Red Knuckles. The settlement was a small town, owned by a tribe called the New California Republic. He quickly found out these were not the people responsible for his tribe, but these people were very outlandish to Grognak. He stayed for a few months, learning new ways, learning of guns and how to wield one (though admittedly he wasnt very good with one). He learned these people use money to trade with each other, and learned the basics of the NCR's ways. In return, he taught many how to fight like him, how to survive in the wasteland.

He also learned of a tribe that once was at war with the New California Republic. A tribe called the Brotherhood Of Steel, they matched the description of the demons he was hunting, and so learned as much as he could about these demons, in hopes to find their dwelling place and seek vengeance. Grognak eventually set off further into NCR territory, and as he travelled he passed through a dangerous road, a lonesome road that nobody else travelled besides deathclaws and other dangerous creatures. Spending many weeks travelling this road, facing the dangers, he passed through an old city, sky scraqers lined the land, but nobody lived here besides the creatures, and this was his first look on the glory of the old world.

Eventually he made it through the road and into civilized NCR land. The settlers there were amazed that anybody survived that road, and so they paid Grognak a handsome sum to travel the road again, bearing messages and packages for other settlements. As a powerful warrior, Grognak reveled in his new position, as a courier for the weak. People who could not brave the roads needed someone who could, and so Grognak took it upon himself as a warrior of the wastes to deliver packages (he also felt most at home in the wasteland rather than in the big settlements that the NCR lived in). Eventually the NCR soldiers followed his path, and in his wake they created a settlement that was named The Divide. Grognak passed through it from time to time, noticing more and more people living there every time he passed through. Then one day, while travelling through the Divide with a package, something happened. An explosion from deep within the earth, the gates of hell opened up and flames and demons emerged.

There were no survivors, save Grognak. How he survived, he did not know, but blessed the Grognak of old for giving him the warrior spirit to do so. Leaving behind the destruction, Grognak set off back to NCR lands and continued to battle creatures of the wastes. He eventually was tasked with delivering a chip of platinum to a city known as New Vegas, one Grognak never saw himself, but heard tell of. On his trip, when he was almost at his destination, he was ambushed by a group of raiders, led by a man with a fancy checkered suit. They took his platinum chip, and shot him in the head and left him in a shallow grave. Most people would have died, but Grognak's time on this world was not yet done, he had greater battles to see through, and so through sheer power of will he survived the shot to the head.

Nobody ever got the jump on Grognak before, but now, Grognak was seeing red and seeking vengeance. He heard tell through the settlers of a town called goodsprings that this man (who shot him in the head) was set off for Vegas. So, seeking vengeance, Grognak left the town of Goodsprings behind and set off straight north to the light shining over the horizon, to Vegas. All he had to do was to cross through a road filled with Deathclaws, the kind of place he felt most at home. And so he ran head long down the road north to Vegas, with a new goal in mind...........

Damn, I already posted mine in the non-canon one.

Well, it is pretty canon, so I'll post it here, anyway.

Probably tomorrow, Idunno.

Ive got a open office file with all of Alexander's backstory sketched out in a pretty rough manner, too rough to post in full. Ive also posted his backstory in a few other places on the forum aswell. The concise version is him being born in a walled village somewhere in the pacific northwest to ex-desert ranger parents, and growing up learning survival and weapons skills that allowed him to strike out on his own in his late teens to wander the wastes and most likely never come back. Since then, he's travelled across the lawless Pacific Northwest, and spent a year wandering the NCR until he decided that the NCR was just too safe and boring for him. Being a courier is one of the odd jobs he often had in the civilized NCR, so he set out to the Mojave frontier to hopefully make some caps in a place that is a lot more exciting than the NCR.

Obviously, the usual Courier 6 stuff happens, and after putting a 5.56 round right between Benny's eyes he has completely washed his hands of the complicated geopolitics of the region, and has gone right back into exploring the small communities that dot the Mojave aswell as waging a personal guerilla war against any Legion he comes into contact with.

I appreciate the Grognak, thanks for sharing! I bet he's a whole lot of fun to play (would've bet he's a <3 INT char though). Are ghouls and supermutants http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Purifier_%28perk%29 in his eyes? (Btw. I don't think 8 year old unarmed children would ever be able to survive a Cazador's nest, much less kill one of these things, but it goes well with the silly concept ;) Maybe he lied?).

Yeah me too.

Thanks for reading, and yeah he is fun to play. He's a character I can do the legion with and not feel too bad, as he has that survival of the fittest warrior attitude.

I didn't make him a <3 intelligence cus I see that more as mentally challenged, and though he is stupid, he is a cunning warrior. Though with the claustrophobia traits he does have only 3 intelligence while inside, which is where most intellectual people and encounters are, making him feel stupider in the presence of technology and science in general.

And yeah the killing the cazador, it was more of a feat of using tactics to beat him rather than straight up fighting it. Using stealth, luring, and a pile of rocks was he able to survive. I imagine something like luring a cazador to chase up a hill towards grognak, where he had a pile of rocks that he rigged to topple down on the enemy and cripple its wings. And then he finished the job with a sharpened stick.

I am also playing with the jsawyer mod, which makes him even harder to play. But I do have minor guns skill with him, he carries one small shotgun, a hunting rifle and a 10mm smg as side weapons to get guys from a far distance, or some of those creatures that are too hard to kill in melee like a deathclaw.

I also utilize mines and grenades as well.

I managed to get to Vegas right off the bat, only encountering one deathclaw that I ran from to Neil's shack, where it killed Neil, but gave me enough time to run up the ridge into black mountain, I miraculously avoided the super mutants and made it to Vegas relatively easy from there.

After finding out he couldn't afford to get on the strip, he decided to answer the call of the happy trails caravan to make some money.

Oh yeah and he also used to see ghouls as monsters til he found a bunch living aside humans in the ncr. He doesn't like them though, definitely prejudiced that way, and it took him awhile to even get that far. He does see super mutants as monsters though.

It's still a WIP, even though he's my favourite character.

Venenum was born in New Reno in 2246.

His father died some time between 2251 and 2252, the reason of his death is unknown, even if Venenum ''somehow'' knows that one of the families did it.

His family always helped him stay away from chems like jet and avoid any addictions.

When he was 19, her mother became sick and couldn't live by herself (she worked in golgotha, she was getting paid to bury the corpses).

The Salvatores offered him a deal: His mother's protection in exchange of doing the family's dirty work.

A couple of years later, he got a crush on a girl named Anna and they passed a lot of time together.

At the same time, the Salvatores ordered him to travel to the Mojave Wasteland and find a group named ''The Great Khans''.

When he refused, the family killed her girlfriend and her mother in front of him.

He stood there and cried for almost two days, then he picked up the revolver that the Salvatores used to kill them, and seeked vengeance.

Without any tears left, he decided to make theirs fall, and started shooting everywhere, until the Salvatores were only history.

He then decited to name the revolver Anna.

After that day, he picked up the stuff that he needed and decided to travel south until the day he would die, as punishment for not preventing the murder.

He traveled all the way to Broken Hills, then to a NCR outpost where he decided to pick a courier job to a place just outside of the Mojave.

He then travelled into the desert, to Primm, and took another courier job: delivering a platinum chip.

That was perfect for him. He thought more than he talked: he knew that there was something important about that package, and hell, if the journey didn't kill him, the cold streets of The Strip would.

He decided to stop in Goodsprings and grab some Whiskey, or better, some Vodka, but something happened that night...

Even if he was dead by the time, there was a part of him that wanted to live, and lies to the other that all those journeys were only about regret, when, in reality, were about a new future.

My most recent run-through of the game was to complete the Mr. House ending of the game. House's agent in this endeavor was an agent who went by the name Ten Shu.

Ten Shu originally came from San Francisco, and was previously affiliated with the Shi (from Fallout 2) before becoming an exile due to an internal power struggle that lead to the death of his patron within the Shi. He headed east and worked as a scout, courier and mercenary, but continually kept an eye out for a more stable and gainful employment and a worthy patron. He was an enthusiast for swordsmanship and relished close-quarters combat, but in keeping with his Shi background he was adept at computer science, medicine and chemistry and was an avid reader. He had a notorious tolerance for intoxicants - he had a bottomless appetite for them and never seemed to succumb to addiction.

Following the events at Goodsprings, he set out on a rampage to reclaim lost honor and retribution. Soon, he would come in to contact with the patron he had been seeking...
