Using magick to restore missing parts of the body

Post » Wed Mar 11, 2015 9:34 am

Is this possible? Can restoration magick restore missing parts of the body? E.g. a cut tongue, a missing finger etc?

If not restoration then something else like Alteration or Mysticism?

If this is possible I assume it would require an experienced magick user and large amounts of magicka?

The alternative would be for a pact with a Daedric prince but would the risks be worth it? And if they can do it (which means it is possible) then why not a very experienced mage/healer with some magicka backup?

Your thoughts would be most welcome

Far as I know we have no examples of people that have had a limb replaced via Restoration. We do have some examples of people losing limbs and requiring more primitive replacements.

I think something like the law of conservation of matter comes into effect here. Growing a new limb back probably requires astronomical amounts of energy, much more than any mage can handle. It also requires absolutely perfect knowledge of the very complex anatomy of the limb. It might be possible to reattach something small, like a finger, immediately after it is severed, but I doubt that generating a whole new arm out of thin air is a thing any mage can do. The only possible exception I can think of would be Fyr, who somehow managed to clone himself three daughters. That guy is a wildcard.

In terms of magical limb replacement, I think the closest you'd get is projecting a new visual using illusion and then using telekinesis to manipulate objects. But a constant and involved spell like that would also be a huge drain of magica. Prosthetics (plus a glamour spell) might just be a simpler and more cost effective way to go.

Closest thing I can think of (And this technically falls outside healing as we know its purview) is the whole "flesh-magic" thing and creatures such as the Flesh Atronach...and the latter doesn't exactly play by the same rules mortals do. At best, I can see the greatest of mages perhaps having the ability to graft limbs onto people, but given that we don't have any examples of it happening, even that's a stretch.

But no, I don't see any arms being regrown/restored from nothing. Healing damage that's already there, sure, but I think there's a point to where it'd be better just to hack it off and go from there, even for the good healers.

Well, when Reman III was blinded in one eye, restoration magic was unable to restore his sight. First thing that came to mind.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts.

I also thought something similar to what Lady Nerevar said and thought that procuring Varla or Welkynd stones to provide the vast amounts of magicka (and soul gems for extra power) would perhaps help. Then I thought that perhaps using alteration to help shape the body might help/ Or even Mysticism to harness the currents of magicka (since magicka is energy that could be converted to matter). Although it seems an impossible feat for perhaps most people (Psijics might be able to but then why would they).

The other option might be necromantic energies I feel. Get a severed limb from another person and animate it/join it to the person you want to heal. That would be most foul though. Then the fleshgardens of the Ayleids came to mind as well. Still not what a Mages Guild healer would do I suppose.

I get the feeling that if Divayth Fyr couldn't get Yagrum Bagarn a new set legs, the chances that any another magic user could (or would) do it for anyone other than the Last Living Dwemer are slim to none.

Edit - Though, on second though, maybe legs weren't too high up on the list of Yagrum's priorities...
