Is it worth it to make skills legendary?

Post » Wed Mar 11, 2015 11:40 am

Just curious as I just noticed this option when i just made my enchanting 100. I now have a ring with 50% frost/fire resistance, and a necklace with 50% shock resistance and 43% one handed damage increase, to go along with the nightingale armor. So i don't think i will need to do much more enchanting.

Anyways, i was just wondering if its worth it to make any skills legendary? pros/cons?

I guess it depends what you mean by "worth it." It might be worth it to some players, I suppose. But I roleplay, so Legendary is worthless to me.

I did it for smithing and regretted it.

It really depends. Making a skill Legendary resets it back to 10 or 15, and removes the perks you had invested in that skill tree, if any (the perk points go back into your pool to be re-allocated). Doing that with something like Alchemy or Enchanting or Smithing means you won't be able to improve/enchant/brew as powerful items anymore until you get the skill back up. However, since the way you level is by increasing skill points, it allows you to keep leveling when you may have otherwise stalled. In the magic trees, you still retain all the spells, it just costs more mana to cast them (since you lost the perk). On the other hand, they tend to level up pretty quickly again.

Personally, if I'm roleplaying a specific character type and am therefore only using certain skills, I will Legendary them so that I can keep gaining levels. I roleplay it as getting to 100 each time is sort of like reaching a new level of education - graduating HS, Bachelor's, Master's, PhD. Sort of the 'I must unlearn what I have learned' approach in order to master the skill anew.

It's actually very much counter-productive. The only real advantage is the ability to reallocate the perk points from the skill that was made Legendary. HOWEVER, most any skill that reaches 100 is one that you want to be powerful and to have a number of high-level perks assigned. Once made Legendary, you can't get those perks back until 1) you build it back up and 2) advance several levels to gain perks to apply to the reduced skill tree. Since your character is obviously much higher now than when he first fleshed out that skill, it will take MUCH longer and oodles more experience to gain the required number of perks to recover those higher-level perk points that are actually worth having.

Only if you have all of your skills at their maximum. Otherwise, I don't recommend it.

I made legendary some skills with my nord character (Hilda) and I really enjoyed the supplemental amount of perks I got. It didn't ruin my roleplay because I see the legendary option as a revision not amnesia. After all, we don't forget the master spells, the enchantments or the ingredients with which we played before.

If you want to do it, plan ahead. For example, I wouldn't make my smithing skill legendary without having a few chests with raw materials.

I think it's not a bad idea if you want to meet the Ebony warrior or wish to fight a legendary dragon, both of which require a high level (80 and 78 I think). Beyond that I don't see much point in it.

this!^ my characters end up not getting certain perks because all my skills that I want are at 100 so no leveling up the best I can do is reset skills like lock pick back to 15 or speech or smithing. And gain a few extra levels that way.

I really dislike that mechanic. It makes no sense from any sort of immersion roleplaying etc standpoint, So for me no.

It can work with Mages, and does fit with becoming a truly powerful Mage Lore-wise.

Everything except a very small minority of Bosses ever get past Level 50, but a Specialist build could face the Ebony Warrior using Legendary.

If you go nuts stockpilling items you craft or enchant and then legendarize that skill, you wont miss it as much.

Example:
I got my smithing to 100 with all the perks. Went nuts making a TON of daedric weapons, armor. Same with dragon. I went legendary and didnt miss it.

It doesn't make any sense in any point of view. It's simply an absurd, moronic feature.

Never used it myself and never will. If only there was a mod to remove that....

Yup, that's why I regretted making smith legendary. My fault for not having a better save position. It just takes so long to get it back to 60 for the arcane perk. I ended up giving myself that one perk back via the consol.

I made Lockpicking Legendary because I never bothered to allocate perks to it. However I'm using a mod that awarded me the perks for Apprentice, Adept, etc., which gave me four perk points I didn't "pay" for. I did that at @ level 35. I'm now at level 59 and I've only gotten the skill back up to @70. (And the mod didn't give me those free perk points the second time around.) Hate to think how painful it would be for a Skill that I really wanted lots of perk coverage.

I agree with Avylin. I've played the game since its inception. Usually, I would stop a character at L 50 or 55 because it was so difficult to level up.

With Legendary, I can "reset" and level higher and higher. Because I don't lose any weapons, I still have their power and my own skill in using them. My goal with

my current character is (just for fun) to get over 100. I am at 88 now. Because he is a Fighter who uses some Destruction spells, and "dabbles" in Alchemy, I

don't mind gaining those perks back and using them in other areas. But, mainly, I just like to keep leveling up quickly for the fun of it.

To each his own.

I have found that non-combat skills are "do-able" if I decide to "Legendary" any skills. Setting my combat skills back to the beginning while still retaining my level makes for fights that are far too tough for my tastes. The opponents are still leveled to my level, not my new skill levels, so I am hurting myself there.

Crafting skills and thieving skills (if a character has sneak, pickpocket, and or lockpicking) are the ones I may legendary up.

If you want to use a certain skill to increase your level or at least to add the perk points to another skill . The easiest to level up is Illusion skill. As stated before its better to max out all skills before doing this cause if you go over max level (that's level 252) all your perk points will disappear.

1. Max out your Illusion skill

2. Join college of Winterhold

3. Get Master Illusion spell Harmony From Drevis Neloren

4. encahnt items so it cost little or no magicka to cast any illusion spell

5 Make Illusion Legendary (mage Stone will help too)

6. Cast Harmony in city (watch it will knock items around).

7 See how in only a few casts Illusion will be back at a 100 and you will have gained 2 levels and 2 perk points.

I had a character that discovered magic late in his career(lvl60) and did not need smithing, one hand, or heavy armor anymore. So it was nice to get those perks back.

I only make a skill legendary when I have finished with a character and want to fight the ebony warrior. (I make alteration legendary several times over). I retire my character once the ebony warrior has been defeated.

Making a skill legendary is basically an option viable only for the non-pc players that wish to break the, now soft cap of level 87 (or something like that iirc), but otherwise there are no pros whatsoever. You suddenly become totally [censored] at a skill that you're sharpening for weeks/days/months(/years, depending on if you roleplay or not :P), and I even fail to see the logic behind the concept in the devs' heads when they figured it'd be a good idea to call random amnesia "Legendary Skill". :P

I completely understand how some players find legenderizing completely immersion breaking and/or illogical. However, when a skill my PC uses frequently reaches 100 and won't improve any more, I find the game becomes less exciting. It's almost sad how a PC can max out and go kind of stale. Legenderizing keeps it exciting though I'm pretty selective about what gets rolled over.

Crafting skills are always a good choice. Once you get them to 100 the first time, craft a bunch of high end stuff to sell or use and then roll the skill over. Alchemy and enchanting both take a long time to rebuild up to 100 so it doesn't seem excessive to me. Smithing is pretty easy to get to 100 (craft jewelry from transmuted iron ore) if you have access to the thief caches across Skyrim (they contain tons of gems).

Sneaking is another good one - you really feel the absence of those perks.

The toughest skills to roll over for my builds are archery and one-handed. I can't remember rolling over skills in the magic school so I dont' know how hard it is re-build them.

This is very much how I utilize legendary. Expanding on the magic end I find conjuration followed by illusion to be 2 of the easiest to roll over to use your anology. With Bound Sword as a known spell and even a small amount of spell cost reduction one can find a mudcrab near the bridge by Redoran's Retreat, get aggro, then position yourself above on the rocks where it can't get you and cast bound sword to you hearts content, you can also level alteration this way with one of the flesh spells. Personally I'm not one to meta-game this way, but instead I'll find myself just one skill up away from leveling and really, really want that skill up. I'll go fire off an arrow from a hidden location at a bandit camp and can usually cast bound sword a few times to get that much desired skill up and level. I like that with TES we can all play "our" way and work using or not using legendary into our game! :tes:

Some very interesting opinions on the subject. Thanks for replying everyone. Don't think i would legendary many of the skills, maybe just enchanting once i have my gear enchanted the way i want it.

I only legendary fast levelling skills such as Illusion, pickpocketing and conjuration (if I'm a mage). I wouldn't even contemplate doing it to skills such as archery and light armour. Those take an insanely long time to level. Archery is one of the worst even when you're using it constantly as your primary source of damage. As for light armour, because I play an archer, I'm more or less staying out of direct combat and it's one of the few skills I have to use a trainer for just to get the level 50 perk.

I think skills such as enchanting and smithing are only useful for so long, so I would do those too if I really needed the levels. I mean, what use is smithing once you have the exact gear/weapons you need for you and any followers? Some holds true for enchanting. Alchemy is different as potions never lose their usefulness.

Talking of archery, I've ploughed in around 100 hours, have only used a bow and my archery has only risen above 90 recently.
