Do you cook your own meals?

Post » Fri Mar 13, 2015 5:37 am

I mentioned in the 'favorite restaraunts' thread that, due to some wounds, I have very rigid dietary requirements.

As such, I've cooked all my own meals for the last 25 or so years. I'll skip over the fancy fangled multisylabic medical jargon, but I can no longer process most foods. My diet is limited to melons, fowl or fish, rice or new red potatos, bell peppers and onions, water and fruit juices.

Additionally, and this is key, it's rather embarrassing to have others watch me try to chew. Some of my inner jaw was removed and dentures are not an option.

So I've learned it best to stumble and fumble through meals on my own. Even when I visit my Father and sisters I prefer to just sit and listen, sip water and occasionally grin.

I'll fry or boil some food stuffs but I couldn't say that I cook often. It is something that I have done in the past and there are a few dishes that I have been able to put together. But most of the time I'll have some microwave meal or ready to eat substitute to sitting down to a full meal. This has led to an abundance of snacking and an apathetic appreciation of the stove.

I usually cook once a week for myself. The rest of the week is a simple meal at work or going out to eat.

I usually cook my own meals. That way, I get what suits my tastes when I want it.

I will microwave or do the fast food thing when I am in a hurry for some reason. Since I am free to make my own schedule, this doesn't happen very often.

I never go to a restaurant alone unless I am traveling. Basically, I go when I am treating someone or they are treating me. Special occasion type of stuff.

Yes but only for the weekends when I have more time and disposition. It's usually just a little desert like apple pie or Hungarian beigli.

Microwaves are great if you also have a crock pot. Make up a big batch of something, put what you don't eat right away into the freezer, then just heat up what's left when you feel like having that dish again. I use containers that are small enough for individual servings and I usually end up with enough of various dishes to last me for a few months, with 5 or 6 meals per crock pot full. Once a particular dish runs out, I spark up the crock pot again and repeat the process.

I wouldn't want to put a figure on how much cooking I do, but I hope it's about fifty fifty between me and my girlfriend. We do eat out or get take out occasionally, but absolutely no more than once a week on average and probably a bit less...

I'm fairly competent at cooking and cook at least one main meal a day together with lighter meals as required. Never been a fan of ready meals/fast food so try to eat as much home prepared fresh food as possible for me and the family.
