Replay value and You!

Post » Sun Mar 15, 2015 12:25 pm

I often see people in this mosh pit we call the internet say stuff like "A game needs choices to have replayability" or "for a game to have replayability you need a lot more stuff to do in the game"

Now, maybe I am in the Minority here, maybe I am just easily pleased, maybe I just don't understand younger gamers in the same way I don't understand why they have an obsession with "Ohh the graphicz!"
But to me, a game only has to meet two requirements to have replay value:

1) did I enjoy it
2) do I think I would enjoy it again

so, I would like to bring this topic up for conversation here on the forums.. what do YOU think gives a game replay value?

EDIT: dang, I forgot the "d" in the word "and" in the title.. much appreciated if a mod could edit it for me :)

I feel the same. Most of the games I replay are JRPGs and visual novels, and they're usually the most linear types of games. I played through the Phoenix Wright series at least 4 times, and the gameplay in that mainly consists of pressing one button to advance the text, lol.

Fixed :P
If I have fun with a game once, I am guaranteed to have fun with multiple play throughs.

I often appreciate games more on repeat plays, because you get to see things you missed, and since you know what's coming you can try to bend the rules a bit for fun.

I have played all of my favourite games through at least 10 times. And dozens more get played 2-3 times.

I play games to tell my own stories. I'm not interested in being an actor in someone else's story. I have trouble getting through linear, story-based games even once. I need the freedom to go where I want, do what I want, when I want to do it. If a game can't offer me that then a game has no replay value for me.

Not only do liner games have no replay value for me. They have no play value for my. I have not made it through a linear game in years, though I have started a couple.

For me it has to be an open world game to even play it once, and to replay it, there has to be enough different ways to do things that I can do things differently on subsequent playthroughs. The more options and variety the game has to offer the more I am likely to play it many times with many characters.
