Epic old School RPG mod? Does it exist? Can it be made?

I long for the old days when you would overhear an NPC talking about a mysterious tower that appeared to him a few miles from the village that he knows was not there before. This sparks your curiousity and you ask him further questions about it...."Where exactly is this tower?". "A few miles northeast", he says. "Just follow the river and head east once you past the bend, can't miss it. Glowing an eerie green it is, 'bout made me piss meself when I seen it!" You start heading toward the river and follow it north (not because a compass told you to, but because the guy did say northeast, and to go east once you past the bend....so duh, follow it north because you paid attention) You have never been to this part of the lands and you do come to what appears to be a bend, but it is not as pronounced as you expected it should be. Could this be it? Or do you keep following the river and hope to see a more pronounced bend? What if you do see another one but the first one was it? This is where it gets exciting, you don't really know because YOU HAVE NO COMPASS OR "X" ON THE MAP TO TELL YOU!! How exciting! So you take the first bend and walk east for what seems like miles, you think to yourself "maybe I went the wrong way?" When suddenly you see over a hill what appears to be the top of a tower...but no green glow. What are the chances? A non-glowing tower out here too? This has to be it right? As you approach it it suddenly begins to glow and make a strange hissing sound. This is it. You proceed to a door....it is unlock. You open the door and enter into the darkness after lighting a torch to help you see.......

Damn I miss these days. So would it be possible (or wow did something already do this, let me download it yesterday!) to turn off the compass and map plotting then go in and change the quest dialogue with the NPC's to give you hints or directions (at times vague) as to where your objective is rather than telling you "Please retrieve my sword from XXX, I have placed the location on your map." I understand this would be a timely undertaking, but damn it would be awesome.
