Followers Dilemma

I have a dilemma with followers. I am only on my second playthrough, but have found that I do not wish to have followers "leave" mid-story. I realize we can let them go and pick them back up at anytime, but it is like putting a book down and picking up another in the middle of the story

I always get ED-E first. The first time, I ran though his story, then picked up Veronica. Now, I dropped ED-E after the Gibson Scrapyard and picked up Veronica right away. But I have already done Veronica's story and it was fun.

I have passed by The Sniper in Novac, The researcher with The Followers, the guy stuck with Mr. Fantastic at HELIOS One (I think he was a choice) and the Human amongst the Ghouls at REPCONN. I just came across Raul's shack and recalled him from my previous play. Maybe I'll pick him up when I get to him.

My trouble seems to be that once I have a follower, I want to see their story through to the end. If presented with another follower, I tend to take note and just go on my way.

CHOICES! CHOICES! Too any choices! That is a good thing, right

[EDIT]

Please move this to the New Vegas area. Sorry for my brain fart here

You don't need to get rid of ED-E in order to have Veronica, you can have both. ED-E is non-humanoid and you can have one of each tagging along.

You shouldn't, he has a good side quest. He's also a very effective companion, one of the best.

Neither of those can be companions, they're just NPCs.
