Just want to make sure of something......

Post » Fri Apr 10, 2015 11:32 pm

Hi all....

I have to say, having only used this forum for a short while, I am really impressed with it. Some forums, especially games forums, are full of idiots, youngsters I'm guessing, that can get really annoying. But here, pretty much most of what I have read has been really helpful. I'm sure there is the odd idiot here and there, that's to be expected, but so far.....it's all been good!

Anyway, enough of that. I have just come to the end of 'The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller' quest, in which instead of finding a horn, I find a note. Now, instead of just finding the note, it actually tells me I have 'failed' the mission, which makes me wonder - could I have done something different or is the note the only way forward? If so, I think telling you that you have failed is a bit misleading. Why say anything - just have the note there and be done with it, no?

If there is another method in which I can get the horn from the cave at Ustengrav, please don't tell me how to do it, but if you could just let me know then I can go back to the saved point and try again. Hope that makes sense!

Thanks in advance

D

And :) ...... I saw in the discussion tab of the uesp wiki page of the quest, it says "Near the Word Wall resides a gold ore vein; there is also a silver one on the opposite end of the the room, along a catwalk which hugs the wall of the dungeon." I've only mined once, and that was awhile ago, so just to make sure, I just need the pickaxe in hand, and the game will tell me when I'm standing next to a vein, is that right? I don't need to do anything funky to find it, just stand next to it? Thx again......

Nothing you could have done. And technically you did fail. You were sent to retrieve the Horn and you failed to do so. But you couldn't have completed it, it's just part of the MQ that way.

You're good, just follow the instructions in the note.

Welcome to the forums!

Spoiler
If you want a nice reward, return the horn to it's rightful place (where you found the note).

AlBQuirky (aka Idiot   )....... I'm guessing you mean the 'Meet with whoever took the horn' quest.

Oh, and any thoughts on the ore comment, as I'm wondering around the cave now and can't find bugger all! And I can't find one sentence in the manual about mining ore!

D

ps.....great game!!!

Ah, bugger it! I can't find any ore veins at all - I just hope I'm doing it right.

OK, I'm off to The Sleeping Giant Inn in Riverwood - I wanna' get the horn ;) (sorry, couldn't resist...)

Another designated odd idiot here. :D

About the ore veins- you won't get a notification if you're standing near an ore vein, at least not in vanilla game (I don't know if you're using any mods that do notify you). However, they are easily visible by glowing veins in the colour of the ore. You don't have to hold the pick if you mine by activating the vein, but if you hold it you can actually hit the vain as if you're attacking it and it'll do the trick just the same. There are some collision problems though, especially with the veins that are oddly placed beneath the platforms, or deeper into the cave wall, and those "manual" hits won't be registered, + I heard that mining this way can cause some ore veins to stop respawning, so perhaps it is advisable to mine by slower but safer activation of the vein. :)

So just to get this right - standing by an ore vein, it won't notify you, you have to recognise it, and then hit it with your pickaxe? Mmm, well either what I read was incorrect about the ore veins being in the cave, or I just couldn't recognise them. Tho it's too late now, I'm back at Riverwood. :)

This is what made me ask:

Under the heading 'Pickaxe'

you'll find ore veins all over the place even just out in your travels you dont need to be in a mine but a mine is a good place to start. It won't notify you that you're near ore per say but it will have the standard interaction pop up if you mouse over it, like when you point at a bucket or door. If you have a pickaxe you can then just interact with it like normal and you'll start the mining animation. Sometimes the veins are hard to differentiate from walls at first but you'll learn to recognize them. You might want to carry a torch or a light spell to make identifying them easier.

I didn't even know you could carry a torch! And do I have to have my pickaxe in hand to discover them, or does it not matter what I am holding?

You should get the popup of "mine ore" or something similar. You don't have to have the pickaxe equipped. Selecting it will bring about the animation. Or you can manually hack away at the vein.
