Riften

Windhelm

Whiterun

Riverwood

Dragon Bridge

Ivarstead

I would likely prefer Solitude over Windhelm if Solitude had as many merchants as Windhelm. I think the lack is a true oversight by the devs.

I made my determination in terms of, "Which is most useful to me?" I like Whiterun because it gives me decent access to Smithing, Alchemy, and Enchanting, and TRAINING. There's also a decent number of merchants -- one is even open 24 hours -- where I can build up cash fairly quickly. And I prefer Riverwood because of FAENDAL -- a Personal Trainer (in Archery, which is VERY useful) who is inclined to sign on as a Follower.

I made my choice pretty much on the same criteria... Riften has more merchants, has training in light armor, archery, sneak, and smithing (at least, perhaps more) and of course a guild if you're of that persuasion. Out of curiosity though, which merchant in Whiterun is open 24 hours?

Lol I heard you like Riverwood

And actually I'm adjusting my list, I'm moving out Markarth from the 3rd spot and moving in Falkreath, its got beautiful hunting grounds and looks really neat.

Ah, I don't know why, but i always tend to overlook that guy... Unless I'm wanting to buy an orcish bow or something. I think it's because I seem to thinkit's an inn, but I can't rent a bed, so I go to the Bannered Mare instead.

My favorite areas of Skyrim are Haafingar and The Reach, and my two favorite cities are in those holds. Solitude is beautiful, and built in an awesome location. I like the waterfront. The Winking Skeever is my favorite tavern, and Lissette is my favorite bard. Markarth is the most interesting city, and looks fantastic. Too bad it's full of awful people. But I guess that's the same with the whole game: Beautiful place you've got here, shame about all the scum and evil creatures everywhere.

If I really lived in Skyrim, though, I'd want to live in Dragon Bridge. Best town in the whole game, as far as a place to live. Not too far from a major city, yet peaceful with great scenery and views.
