Stuck on low graphicstextures despite being set to Ultra

Post » Mon Apr 20, 2015 10:18 pm

Hi all,

I wonder if you could help me with a particularly infuriating problem I'm having.

For months I had been running Skryim (with the Bethesda HD texture DLC) on Ultra settings and it ran like a dream. Then (against my better judgment) last week I decided to install Realvision ENB by following all of the instructions on the Nexus Mods page for it. It didn't look the way I was expecting and I quickly decided to revert to vanilla, so I uninstalled it.

However, ever since then the graphics/textures in-game look appalling and appear as if they are stuck on Low, despite being set to Ultra. Even the images in the loading screens look like they are much lower resolution than they used to be. I did a lot of googling and this appears to have happened to a number of people before. I have now done the following several times:

-clean uninstall and reinstall of Skyrim (including deleting all loose files manually through Windows and deleting all local content through Steam)

-deleting all saved games

-deleting Skyrim and Skyrimprefs ini files (both manually and through verifying integrity of game cache through Steam)

-deleting and reinstalling all DLCs (being the Bethesda HD texture pack, Dragonborn and Dawnguard)

-restoring all the settings on my graphics card driver control panel to default (I am running an Nvidia GeForce GTX 980, with an Intel i7-4790K (4GHZ) CPU and 16GB memory).

None of this has worked and I am running out of ideas. I know people might say that this is the risk you take as soon as you start installing third party Mods, but by the same token I find it difficult to accept that I am unable to just completely uninstall and reinstall from scratch a game that I have paid for, which is what seems to be happening.

Has anyone experienced this before or can anyone offer some guidance?

Many thanks!

Sort of stupid question, but did you recheck the game's set resolution to make sure it isn't actually set to lower one? :P

Yeah, that doesn't make sense, does it ???

-------------Try the uninstall procedure like this: (i would manually uninstall Skyrim through your control panel (Program and Features), and not via Steam !!!)

Spoiler

First do a standard uninstall. (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features-> Uninstall The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim)

Next, delete your skyrim folder under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\

Then delete your Skyrim directory under Documents\My Games

Then under C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Local\ - Delete the Skyrim folder that is in it.
(You should enable to see the hidden files under windows to delete that folder.) HOW: (View - Options - Folder Options - View - Advanced Settings: Show hidden files, folders and drives)

Go to your Steam folder. Delete the folder named appcache. (Important)

Use Ccleaner after all this (http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner), Go to the Registry tab and hit -
In the Options tab go to Monitoring and uncheck: Enable System Monitoring and Enable active Monitoring

Reboot your computer (Important)

Then install your game again, from scratch. !!!!

*** You don't need to uninstall Steam. ***

No stupid questions my friend!

Yep it's still set to the correct resolution (at the launcher at least, unless there is some in-game setting I am missing?)

Thank you for the reply. I have tried this and unfortunately it doesn't appear to have worked.

When you say "reboot your computer", do you just mean restart it normally, rather than having to go into BIOS or anything like that?

Yes, just a normal restart. Otherwise, i would say boot into BIOS.

What you mean, you have tried the above, on your previous post.

Not only manual uninstall Skyrim through your control panel (Program and Features)

The are more steps to go !!!

Have you done those too !!!

Yep I did everything in your post - manual uninstall, deleting all the loose files (including appcache), ran Ccleaner, rebooted and reinstalled. Opened up the game and same problem again :(

Delete the TESV nvidia profile if you are using one. Are you using NMM or MO?

I wonder if a quick reinstall of your GPU drivers are in order. Try a clean install. There is a check box in the wizard.
