Discussion for Workshop Paid Mods - Thread 3

Post » Sat Apr 25, 2015 12:21 am

That said, if you see stolen content.. report it? Seriously, they have a report system for a reason. I'm pretty sure you may even be able to file DMCA's, although involving the legal system is a hassle.

That said, meh. I've said my piece. I really want to see actual metrics out of this before I make a judgement call.

They do that anyway. Seriously.

It is, and valve's 30% cut is standard. They do it to EVERYONE. But eh, I don't honestly care. Game companies tend to rely on sales of previous product between releases, and when you consider inflation, game prices are not rising in sync while game development costs are. What are you to do? It's why DLC is so pervasive. They need the money for various things. (Profits being one, but paying your employees between releases being another.)

That said, if you don't like it, don't pay for it or release for pay. Problem solved. (Incidentally, did you know you can't actually use Kickstarter and Patreon is a legal gray area, since you don't own the base IP? Something should really be done about that, but IP law is a hassle to redo - see the current patent troll kerfuffle.)

Anyway, I want to see the data. Does it acutally make modders money? If so, it's a worthwhile thing. Does it not? Then no, it's not.

That's pretty much how some people got rich with emulators on Android.

How do you expect Valve to pay them?

I say nip it in the bud. Eventually it will get out of hands, it won′t stay where we think it will unless we speak up against it.

@Bethesda - Have a donation button if you really care about modders.

If you don′t want payment or pay for anything, why would you ever give away your bank info?

Why do you not want modders who want to get paid get paid?

As for donation buttons - NO ONE DONATES. It's not a worthwhile idea.

...

Because I recognize that payment processors like having it. Also, if you buy any game on Steam, they HAVE your bank info...

Anyway...

That′s not what we′re discussing. The question was if I don′t want to recieve revenue, why would I give away that info?

And I do not recognize anyone having my info just because. If I want to conduct business then yes, otherwise no.

Why not? Not like anyone could do anything with your account number and sort code.. other than give you money

If you want to protest then please email Valve at this link:

http://www.valvesoftware.com/email.php

You can also tweet Beth's PR guy, Pete Hines here:

If anyone has a contact email for Bethesda, let me know. I can't find one.

Same reason I don′t give away my real name or address here. I just don′t want anyone to just have that info.

Yes, that is what we're discussing on one parallel track. You have two arguments pending. If you don't want to give your bank info and you want to publish a mod, you don't have to use Steam. Go use the Nexus. But if you want to use Steam, Valve wants it so that if you change your mind later, they don't have your info then. It's a fairly common practice.

I'd rather work for free than have someone make 75% off of my work. Especially since it's very unlikely they'll ever make the threshold($400) so I could receive $100. Which would mean I if they receive $399 and no more, I get $0. This only helps the middle men despite how it's being advertised and sold to everyone. This does not help the majority of modders and helps very few. It will create a completely differenty environment and it will not be worth it, don't be blinded by your greed.
