Protest of paywalls - I've hidden my mods, Apollo has too

Post » Sun Apr 26, 2015 1:59 am

I'm following Apollo and this, and have also hidden all my mods in protest. (Except for Modding Skyrim: Modder's Edition and Black Toe Meadhall as that was a collaboration.)

They should NOT be uploaded on the Workshop for monetization or not, ever.

I hope others will join, if they believe the same.

... seriously? Are you serious!?

Because someone wants to make a buck off their work, you'd hide YOUR work?

SERIOUSLY?

ApolloDown hid his mods because they require SkyUI.

And he's allowed to hide his work if he wants. They are his work after all.

Sure. I'm allowed to be disappointed. And considering SkyUI will remain free with the paid update being optional, you'll excuse me if I think that this is just silly. It only hurts the end users.

SkyUI v4 will remain free. Any new versions and updates are paid. This hurts modders who were hoping to make use of new features.

I said it Apollo's thread on reddit and I'll say it again here: I am 100% behind both of your decisions. I've used mods from the both of you in the past and I wholeheartedly I applaude you both for your convictions.

Then.. don't? :| Seriously, I fail to see how a stable free release with a premium optional hurts anyone. Especially when he said any core improvements will be in the free version.

But hey, go tilt at that windmill.

I wish you, and all who follow you in this pursuit the best of luck. Huzzah!

It's called protesting. https://40.media.tumblr.com/7c5f15f21d17d3f6ee6b0a09a265209f/tumblr_nncgbrSQFx1tbhdnao1_540.jpg.

Btw, Skyrim mod piracy has already begun. That didn't take long

Piracy won't take long for any reason, because there is always a subset of people who refuse to pay for things. Period.

They shouldn't have to pay for it, most definitely.

What else can you do in protest - I would wish all modders who dislike the paywall would remove their mods from the workshop and hide them on Nexus for as long as they see fit - it would be a a far more poignant statement than a petition.

This community is clearly going to change - having hidden mods is likely just the start.

All the best with the protest

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that if I mod I'm obligated to give you my work for free. (I'm not.)

I - and any others that have moral integrity - do not pay for things that should be, and have always been free and open source. Donations however are more than fine. This current system? A huge middle finger to the modding community, and to the spirit of open source and creativity. Anyone who participates in this deplorable practice deserves the backlash that comes their way, as they are contributing to the destruction of this once beautiful community.

I think you're taking these discussions far too personally. Everything you have posted recently comes off as combative and condescending, and that is in absolutely no way conducive to civil discussions.

To be fair, KN has the minority opinion here. From personal experience, if it's you versus everyone else, you tend to become a little defensive in a discussion.

There is no reason why mods must be open source, and I really don't think I appreciate you declaring that your ideal system is the only moral one. Because it sure isn't. There are other ideal systems that don't require people to be forced to work for free. If they want to do it for free because they feel that's good? I'm not going to stop them. If they want to get paid for it? I'm not going to stop them.

It should be their choice, and not yours or this nebulous "communities" making it for them.

True enough. Perhaps we could all benefit from a deep breath.

I'll try to tone it down a bit. I'm not trying to start flamewars as much as I just happen to dislike echo chambers. And if I cause someone to think on it, all the better.

There is a thread for the conversation you guys are having.... http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1516841-discussion-for-workshop-paid-mods-thread-7/

As is often the case, threads are closed by where they go, not the OP itself.
