Disc V STEAM

Post » Wed Apr 29, 2015 10:17 am

Along with the recent "Modgate" debacle (which I don't intend to discuss at the moment), came yet another instance of STEAM totally ruining my game experience. Below in pink is a copy of a post I wrote on STEAM and in reply to one of Gophers very sensible YouTube video casts;

"I spent about an hour yesterday going from comment to comment defending the modders from the panty wetting, hysterics! I got some vitriol myself for that, but I'm teflon when it comes to abuse!

The one thing that did make me have a meltdown however, that you haven't mentioned Gopher ( because its a slight deviation from the central issue), is that Valve, in implementing this new scheme, took it upon themselves to delete everything in the players Skyrim folder (except the Game and the DLCs), not just the mods from the workshop, the mods from Nexus, other sites and even my own ******* mods! My game was stripped! Due to all the recent Workshop problems with the mod limitation schemes and the ck updates etc, I have had to reload Skyrim and my 68 mods, three times in the last 6 weeks which seriously, seriously ticks me off.
They seem to have no respect whatsoever for their users!
So my final point is that I'm considering taking Skyrim off Steam and running it from my disc as I did in the old days, that way i would be protected from this arbitrary wiping out of my game content! However, If I do that, will I be able to find a trustworthy copy of the CK because I have about a dozen followers almost ready to upload to Nexus!
EDIT I wiped Skyrim from my STEAM account yesterday intending to run it from my disc and so avoid having them arbitrarily rip the guts out of my game over and over again. Then I discover I can't run it without STEAM and that it is in fact illegal to do so! You may think that this was naive of me, but I have bought all Bethesda games since Battlespire, so am accustomed to running games from disc. Skyrim was bought and installed for me as a surprise birthday gift so I was unaware of this until now. For me, this utter dependency on STEAM is a far greater tragedy than paid mods could ever be."
Like many people i mod and play to forget my sorrows and stresses. I also, like everyone else, have limited time. It is utterly heartbreaking to me to sit down at my computer with a sense, not of pleasant expectation of the wonderful lands that I am about to explore, or the sheer joy of creating something unique to add to my game, but a sense of stomach churning dread at what I will find. I wont be playing Skyrim for a long time if ever again, I love it too much to go through this stress over and over again.
No doubt gamesas had their reasons for giving STEAM the monopoly on their games but it would have been a lot fairer to give your followers the choice.

My folder wasn't stripped... Granted, I keep all my mods in Mod Organizer directory, but I had a couple of non-vanilla files there and they're intact. Not sure what happened to your game.

Never had Steam 'strip' out my Skyrim folders (Or any game folder) Unless I specifically delected delete local content.

Don't know what your problem was, but I would suggest it lies elsewhere, unless you think Steam is just picking on you?

This doesn't sound like a common experience- it seems to be that "Steam is just picking on you" if Vavle's changes causes your mods to be removed. I've just went through my stuff, and everything is there (as far as I can tell), and Google search isn't rife with "Valve deleted my stuff!" complaints.

Who else uses your computer? Is it possible that you are accidentally deleting you local files? Do you keep your files in a nonstandard space on Steam? Is Skyrim the only game that's effected?

I've never had Steam strip me of my mods, either. But then I always play with Steam in offline mode.

I only used Steam to install my game from the Legendary disc that someone gave me as a gift.

My mods only come from Nexus and are managed by NMM. I even start the game via SKSE instead of directly through Steam.

I'm not a fan of the whole Steam concept at all and feel that it simply introduces more that can go wrong while adding no value or benefit. That said, I will confess that I've never had a problem with the limited way in which I use/avoid Steam. Specifically, I've never had a mod problem that involved Steam.

I've had problems with Steam. Not deleted files but I can play Skyrim one evening and the next morning it wont start (nor will the CK). Evertime that happens I end up spening an hour or so Googling to find the solution and the steps to get it running again. When I ran Elderscroll games from disk I never had problems like that, it just ran. I dislike Steam so much that I stopped buying Civ games when they moved to Steam. A pity I've got Civ 1-4. I won't be buying 5 especially after my Skyrim problems. You can't even call Steam and have someone help you access the game you paid for.
