Hi all. Long story short, I'm having computer problems and I may have to replace some of the below parts (one or more):

Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz
Asus P6T
6gb RAM (3x2GB)
1TB HD
Ati 5850 1GB DDR5
Hiper PSU (forgot the wattage)

Given this system configuration, what substitute parts would you recommend? I could always replace a part with an identical part of course.

Most probably the issue lies within the graphics card or the PSU. Hopefully not the motherboard. It's at the repair centre right now anyway.

This GPU is an older Ati model, so it could be something wrong with it. (also related to the PSU, if it's an older model)

But, i can't say - without knowing exactly the problem !!!

If it's the mobo, you will have difficult time as:

• You need another LGA1366 mobo (quite expensive)
• If you buy another mobo (LGA1150), there is no guarantee you will find a board (if any...), that operates with the i7-920 CPU

I don't think he's asking us to diagnose a problem (that's what the repair center is doing). He's asking us to recommend substitute parts.

Well, the GPU is definitely worth an upgrade. The Radeon 5000 series is getting long in the tooth and a 1GB framebuffer is getting to be on the minimal side nowadays.

Mark41 - that's exactly the type of reasoning I wanted to read! I wanted to see how compatible my rig is to newer components. From your post let's hope the problem is not the motherboard then. If it's the graphic card, should any newer card be compatible? Assuming my PSU is up to standard (which it may not be, but then I'd buy a new one. It's at the higher range of wattage however, I think 800w).

Didact: what would you recommend? As an FYI, my 5850 suited all my gaming needs.

It could be anything !!!

If he changes the CPU, then most probably he changes the Mobo as well. !!!

Considering the GPU may or may not work properly - or even getting another newer and faster one, means a new GPU as well.

So at the end of the day, he may needs a new computer.

Therefore, i wanted to wait for the end result, and the possible failing part or parts.

As it is right now, lets hope it's not the Mobo.

My opinion - keep that mobo (a very good one from Asus btw) and you wanna keep your 4(8) core processor as well.

Definitely you need a new GPU. This Ati 5850 was a good GPU, but not enough juice for today games anyway.

What's the exact PSU model. Hyper (aka High Performance Group) has a lot of series models !!!

Of course it doesn't matter much, if it's working correctly (that we don't know right now) - but if it's very old, you should have in mind to change it.
