by alternate History, you are referring to a piece of fiction that takes place in our world, but the outcome of a particular past historical event caused the world to advance in a different direction than it did in reality, correct?
some are good, some are not so good (just as it is with any type of Fiction)..
years ago I read a novel all about a scenario that took place in the early 80s, but in a world where the British Empire had continued to grow and develop to be such a large Military and Political Powerhouse that they ruled the majority of the civilized world, and events like WWI never happened (as in this Scenario the area that should have been Austria-Hungary and the majority of Europe were part of the British Empire, as such Archduke Franz Ferdinand was never an important figure and wasn't assassinated causing political upheaval that contributed to WWI).. as a result many nations likes the USA, Canada, or Australia never existed at all..
it was interesting reading the authors interpretation of how such a scenario would have drastically changed the world from how we see it today, the fact certain technologies would never have been developed at all, the divide between the upper and lower class in a world where the majority of it was united under a single monarch, the results of how such a scenario caused a major boost to followers of Anglican church (or top be more specific, the Church of England), etc..
really wish I could remember what the name of the book was.. i found it at a library back in university, a girl i knew back then recommended i read it..
Do you mean an alternative timeline? Like say, Wolfenstein: The New Order?
I think it's good if it's well written, well researched and well thought through.
Also it depends on how much is changed, if you change too many scenarios you might as well make up your own world.
But in general, yeah I like it.
