Light-Based Computer systems?

Post » Fri May 22, 2015 11:10 am

Buddy of mine just sent me this article, and while it's extremely light on actual information, the idea itself is quite interesting. Unfortunately I'm not much of a tech/science person, so I have no idea how feasible this is. So I figured I'd come here, share the link: http://www.kutv.com/news/features/top-stories/stories/Light-based-computers-in-development-to-be-millions-of-times-faster-than-electronics-based-designs-133067.shtml#.VV1_30YbLZX%C2%A0

Personally I think that optical computing will be of great value in furthering the development of quantum computing because optical computation is a nonlinear process in which multiple signals must interact and quantum computing share theoretical similarities with non-deterministic and probabilistic computers.

I also have no frigging idea what I just wrote.

These computers that run off of light along with quantum computers, might actually be a reality for the any person to purchase not 10 years from now, but 20 years from now or 30 years from now.

IBM from what I last read has successfully developed not to long ago a quantum computer that works exactly like they wanted. Data transmitted through crystal photonics is what I read.

This computer seems to also be manufactured in cooperation with IBM and Intel it seems and it also uses light photonics instead of crystal photonics like quantum computers.

These light based computers will not only be 1 million times faster than any electronics we have today, but 1 million times more powerful. At least from what I read. As well as being more energy efficient than ever before.

Nvidia also talked a lot about how with having more powerful technology than ever before that we can find cures for all cancers and diseases faster than ever before. Nvidia has a cancer talk somewhere.

In all honesty, I find quantum computing rather interesting with the possibility of sharing theoretical similarities. Not saying it's impossible or plausible, I don't have the background or no how to say one way or another, but quantum entanglement might lead towards faster than light communication if what happens to one particle can happen to another in near instantaneous circumstances. I wouldn't be surprised if quantum entanglement could lead towards possible technology that would be "in theory," teleportation.
