What is your major? Or what did you major in?

Post » Sun May 31, 2015 6:48 pm

So right now I'm studying computer science. In my part time, I'm learning python and delving into some assembly to get an idea of how languages interact with the hardware and also how everything comes together. So far, it's increasingly fascinating. I'm always learning something new or how to implement something better.

So what about you guys?

So I have no idea what a major is. I went to college to study chemical engineering technology (basically I'm to chemical systems what an IT guy is computer networks...kinda).

I don't think it's the same, though. I think Canada's colleges are more similar to american tech schools.

EDIT: but I did learn from it that science isn't really something I enjoy in depth. I like reading about new discoveries and what not, but I have no patience for testing, theory, reports...really any of the actual work involved. I did learn that I love the hands-on, building and fixing stuff part. So that's something. Might take electrical tech in September.

I dropped out of high school so no major. But if I had gone to college I suppose my major would probably have been Architecture.

I never went to college, but I am a Pacific War and Roman history buff. I'm also a Bethesda forum commando! :geek:

I majored in advertising. Graduated 3 years ago. Prior to that I had been running my own crappy freelance graphic design business for 6 years. I stayed in advertising for a couple of years as an art director but have been doing more graphic design based jobs in the last couple of years.

I'm assuming the question is what did I study? In my case, the rather vaguely named "information technology", which was in essence a sort of applied computer science course. Only in spite of the best intentions, it wasn't especially well-conceived, so in reality it was pretty much "like computer science, only less useful". They dropped the course after a couple of years, so I guess that makes my qualification quite, erm, special. It's certainly that.

Environmental engineering, which is actually an offshoot of civil engineering.

Not being American, I don't really know what "majoring" is. I went to university and got my honours degree in Aviation Technology, which was based on aeronautical engineering but with some of the higher level mathematics and engineering modules replaced with flight training and more airline-based stuff, such as airline economics, advanced navigation, that sort of thing.

Physics. But it's not called major here. No minor. Just pure Physics. Three years.

M.Sc. In Physics drop out.. To do my MD.

I'm in my senior year studiying Information Assurance/Cyber Security Engineering. It's interesting and fun, always something new to learn. Plus, it gives me a chance to break things for "research."

I like that scene in Rules of Attraction when a boy meets a girl in the corridor at their college and they ask each other about their majors, but none of them know what their own major is, and they laugh. I imagine if I went to college in America it would be a bit like that. It's not too late. :) Anyways, I myself have a bachelor of laws from uni in England.

This thread reminded me about my friends that went to college and received degrees. See if this sounds familiar.

1) Masters In English. Then a Law Degree. Now a Systems Lead for Microsoft.

2) Bachelors in English Lit. Now writing code for a bank.

3) Masters in Chemical Engineering. Now a top level anolyst for Microsoft.

4) Bachelors in Biology, Masters in Statistics (switched emphasis). Now heading a statistical company.

Then you have some of my family members:

1) Masters (very nearly a Doctorate) in Russian History. High up in a local bank's trust department (and since received a law degree).

2) Masters in Journalism. Now a minister :)

3) Doctorate in Archaeology. Now a collegiate professor teaching anything from English Lit to Archaeology.
