Why do the content of some books change?

Post » Mon Jun 08, 2015 9:38 am

I am reading some lore books, and I have noticed some of the same books are in several games, but sometimes with changes to them. For example there is one change from the book "From The Memory Stone of Makela Leki" between the version in Daggerfall and the one in ESO. As ESO is made later I assume that is the "updated" right version? But what is the reason for the change? In this particular example the god of war "Ebonarm" is mentioned in the Daggerfall version, but removed in the ESO version. Could this mean they have scrapped this god from the lore? The lore version have the mention of Ebonarm in it though so I am confused..

Daggerfall version:

""Ahhhh, the pain, I must block it out, no one would want to hold my stone and hear my thoughts if I let it record my pain. Thank the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Ebonarm and the training I received in The Hall of the Virtues of War. I CAN block out this pain. Ummm just, ah, there, it's walled off."

ESO version:

"Ahhhh, the pain, I must block it out, no one would want to hold my stone and hear my thoughts if I let it record my pain. Thank the training I received in The Hall of the Virtues of War. I CAN block out this pain. Ummm just, ah, there, it's walled off.

It could be a sign of removing Ebonarm from the lore if not for the fact that he is mentioned in dialogue in ESO. In fact, he's described as one of the most widely worshipped Redguard gods, with people commonly keeping a shrine to Ebonarm in their homes. So maybe it was miscommunication, maybe they wanted to scrap him but forgot about the dialogues, it's hard to say.

You will find other minor changes like this. One of the most notable is censoring The Real Barenziah: only the Daggerfall version contains the description of her sixual encounter in a tavern.

I blame editors. Editors are the scourge of the Earth. I'm sure it's no different on Nirn. They can't leave a good thing alone. I think Mark Twain said it best:

"Another editor. That thing behind his ear is his pencil. Whenever he finds a bright thing in your manuscript he strikes it out with that. That does him good, and makes him smile and show his teeth, the way he is doing in the picture. This one has just been striking out a smart thing, and now he is sitting there with his thumbs in his vest-holes, gloating. They are full of envy and malice, editors are."

:hehe:

Yes I have heard the thing about the six scene in Barenziah. But that was more for "cencur" reason then anything else? I am trying to learn the lore so I am more confused with things like the Ebonarm and if that is considered removed from the lore or not.. :s

later publication perhaps? real books often get small content edits to make it easier to understand some terminology or to change something so it makes more sense in another nations language..

if you went and read a 1st edition copy of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and then compared it with a copy just recently published in France, you would likely notice plenty of small changes not unlike the one you mentioned in your OP..

at least, thats my take on the subject

well, considering Ebonarm is basically not mentioned beyond some small mentions in the in-game books since i think, Daggerfall, IMO, it does seem that they are slowly getting rid of him.
