Cannot get dynamic improved water to work

Post » Thu May 20, 2010 7:22 pm

Hey guys, I've been looking into the MGE for a while today and got it installed on my new steam Morrowind copy and successfully activated the graphical effects I desired (DoF, SSAO, Bloom, etc). But I have run into a small problem, I simply can't get the old water to change into the new, dynamic water that those amazing modders have created! I believe I've gone through all the steps correctly, my main problem is that the instant I'm ingame, in the top-right corner of my screen, there's a message that says, "Could not load volumetric water normal texture".
And no matter what I do (i've tried 2 water mods, ImprovedWaterShader_v06b, and Water_Shader_Tweak_for_MGE_3_8) I can't get it to "activate" (if that's the problem)!

Is there anyone out there that can help me resolve this issue?

Thanks in advance.

First off, you should be asking this question in the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1097626-morrowind-graphics-extender-mge/.

Second, the volumetric water normal texture was introduced into the latest revisions of MGE and is not compatible with previous water mods. The error message is coming up because that texture referenced by the latest revisions' InGame.fx is missing, probably due to one of those water mods replacing the '...\Textures\mge\default\water' folder. The volumetric water normal texture reduces the number of textures needed to a single texture instead of 32 textures.

If you're using MGE v3.8.2-rev-0178 you don't need to add water mods - the InGame.fx and d3d8.dll that comes with ImprovedWaterShader_v06b is only compatible with earlier specific revisions of MGE. Good news is that the features of that water shader have now been incorporated into rev-0178. You'll also run into problems if you replace the d3d8.dll that comes with rev-0178.

The Water_Shader_Tweak_for_MGE_3_8 should only be used with the official version 3.8.0b.

You can correct the problem by reinstalling MGE after removing any of those water mods.

Ok, thanks for the info... Though I've run into a new problem now... I completely removed the water, MGE, everything, and reinstalled MGE, creating the distant land I supposedly need to make the water work correctly, but now all I get is a black screen ingame? This time I didn't load in any shaders like SSAO, DoF, HDR, etc, I just wanted to see that the water worked, but it doesn't. Am I doing something wrong? I'm not sure what is going on.

EDIT: Scratch that, I forgot to disable the Steam Community Overlay, now the screen is no longer black... BUT: the water is still unchanged! It's still the stock water. What am I missing? I don't get why this is so hard to get to work!
