Is NMM Skyrim nexus safe?

Post » Thu Jul 16, 2015 10:31 am

Hi,

I have recentley started to mod my skyrim game and, whilst its going fine, I'm getting some paranoia over the Nexus and its third party Mod Manager. I was told by someone that these third party programs and folders can be linked to 'pirated software' which can damage my system. This obviously got me worried, I dont want any damage being done to my computer! On the other hand, Im aware that the Skyrim Nexus is one of, if not THE, most used mod source for skyrim.

So should I continue as planned with the nexus? Or should I switch to Steam Workshop?

Thanks

Nexus and NMM are perfectly safe. Whoever told you that was talking out of their [censored].

Also, you can mix and match mods between Steam and Nexus if you wish.

Indeed, using Nexus and NMM is perfectly safe. Whoever was telling otherwise was BSing you, big time.

If there's a mod source I'd avoid, that's Workshop. However that's nothing to do with safety but with practicality.

I have been on these boards since, 2004, and lurking for a year or so before that. I have never heard of a Mod from Nexus, or any mod site, being malware. Could someone sneak a file in that is not a mod? Probably, but it would not last long. There are people who download any new mod just because it is new. It would quickly become known if it was a problem file or not. The Nexus folks are great at taking down crap when it is reported.

Now, all that being said, can you hose your save file using mods? Absolutely if you don't take care and thought when choosing and installing them. So, follow good mod install practices, they are spelled out all over the boards here and at other mod tutorial websites. And, yes there are poorly made mods that can mess up your game or mess with other mods, so read the reviews and comments before downloading or installing.

Also, in this game, once you load a mod into the game then load a save, things can happen to the save because of the mod. 99.9% of the time, this is OK. But, always, always, always, make a forked save when trying out a new mod. This way you can remove the mod and load up the save from before you put it on your game and not have to worry about it. Never remove a mod from your game if you have used it for a while and have been making saves, unless you have the pre-mod save handy and want to go back.

Nexus Mod Manager is not 'third party'. It is the creation of the Robin Scott and the programming staff of the Nexus itself. You can trust it as well as any program that is still in beta. If anyone told you differently you were lied to.

As others have said, NMM is perfectly safe. Wrye Bash and Mod Manager are both better than NMM for managing your mods, but NMM is perfectly safe to use.

Edit: just noticed that you started the other thread asking if you could get banned from using NMM. May I ask where you are getting these ideas from?

NMM is perfectly safe to use in every respect. It does not have as many features as either Wrye Bash or Mod Manager, so many of us prefer to use one of those mod managers instead of NMM, but there is nothing "wrong" with using NMM. And yes, the Nexus is the biggest and most popular mod site around. The Nexus is as safe as any other popular internet site, perhaps safer.

There's a whole forum on Nexus which is expressly used as a public list of the kinds of people that would fill a newbie's head with malicious lies about Nexus. :)

Isn't one of these threads enough?
