thoughts on weapon balance

I'd like to start a little discussion on this. What are the general thoughts of balance in the game, and approaches to fix it?

To me, balance would mean each weapon type having it's own purpose, and playstyle. Where things stand now, sure daggers are shorter range and faster, however, what does that speed really help if your attacks are all hitting for the low end of the damage roll.

There are also certain weapon types that seem to be completely purposeless. I've never had a situation that throwing weapons seemed to be useful in any way at all.

There also seems to be a problem to me with artifacts not being deserving of the title. Most of them are just strong, enchanted weapons that could easily be outclassed by an enchanted daedric weapon.

This is something that I think would be fun to address, but would really like some insight into what everyone thinks could be done better.
